The other guitarist in a band I was in used an 8100 Valvestate and he got good sounds out of it. Not as good as the Mosfet amp though IMHO.

What a ridiculous statement! Where do you think the overdrive comes from? I have an AVT20 which I use as a practice amp, and it sounds great!

I had the two 12 combo version for about a week. I could not describe how awful the distorted tone was. Tea41 was being generous!

Marshall should definitely make more valvestates in England. Hook a decent British voiced 412 and your in modern highgain territory. The original speaker in mine not enough low end.

The VS265r was my first Marshall, I think it sounded great! I haven't played it in years though as it's in storage. It also has v30s in it not the goldbacks.

Yeah this was always a bit confusing. Besides the MG line, there was the Valvestate line. That then evolved into the Advanced Valvestate line, (AVT).

I’m not sure what the difference is. Back when these were coming out I always thought the AVT line sounded much better than the MG line.

Today, many here like the MGs, although I haven’t played one in decades.

I own an old AVT20 combo, I’ve had for over 20 years, you can see it in this pic below the Bugera head,…

I have used the odd Valvestate amp over the years and I really try to avoid them. Harsh buzzy things compared to a cooking valve amp!

I bought my VS65R a couple of years ago just slave to a DSL40CR for a stereo rig.
But I play the VS now as often as the DSL.
I even built a pedalboard for it that works better with the VS than the DSL.
The DSL plays better with a GT-100.

I've played an AVT 50 head through a 1965a cab. A buddy of mine gigged with that rig as well. What a GREAT tone! Very sweet, tight and sings! I would surely own that set up today.

This was the last AVT50H and matching cab that I had, it was a great amp, but I did sell it.
    Cheers

V30s are great. The goldback in mine not a good speaker. I have to use a amp for days to see if I like it. Usually I hate the amp I bought in a few days. I have a digitech rp155 with vic virth headphones. It sounds decent. Nothing like speakers. Marshall has a great sound. Try rhe eminence British voice speakers. They are brutal. Sorry for.getting off topic. Bad habit of collecting
    amps and guitars.

I purchased this amp myself about a yearago in a pawn shop for $125. I used to have a microstack from the 90s that was pretty darn good.

What were the retail prices on these when released out of curiosity?

in my personal experience when i was a teen i would accept nothing less than a 100 watt marshall half stack ,years later in my old age when i started guitar back up again ,i tried some valvestate amps paired with one of them there chinosaur smaller budget cabs from the flea market ,it wasn't long before i knew what i had to do ,get me an all tube head and a 1960 cab . pictured in my avatar, they had offspring ,sprung right out of the ground they did .

My first amp was a JMP 2203 with a 1922 cab.
I loved it and hated it.
The image was right but my younger self had no clue as to how to make it scream like Metallica.
    I tried a 1960 cab. Same difference.
Tried a 9004 preamp. No idea about cascading, so I used it in front of the clean setting (I know, don't beat me).
I even tried a DOD Thrash Master (the horror!).
In the end I sold it all and bought a Mk I Valvestate 8080 combo.

    Chug chug heaven! :shred2:

All tubes are not the right choice for everyone, all the time!
