I found that only 1968 major has 4 filter caps on top of the chassis.
And seems like all post 1968 major has 5 filter caps on top of the chassis.
So, marshall add one more filter cap on top of the chassis at very late 1968??
If I'm not mistaken OP's major was 1968 made??
    Please correct if I'm wrong.

Ned, that’s an interesting thought! I’ll have to look into that idea.

The serial number in the 1500A range indicates late June to early July 1969.

I meant heavily modded one looks 1968 made because it has 4 filter caps on top of the chassis.
I don't have doubts about cleaner one is 1969.

Thanks for the insight! I hadn’t figured that out. Now I’m hunting for a tech experienced with vintage Marshall’s in the Los Angeles area

Well, LA is probably one of the best places on earth to find a well experienced Marshall technician, so you've certainly got a positional advantage in your quest!

Please keep us updated. This is INTERESTING.

I had an opportunity to buy a Major for 2K cash and I had 2K cash in my pocket. It was in good shape but there was no tolex left on the cabinet. (Not a deal breaker.) I decided that though it was tempting, it wouldn't be the best usage of my limited funds at that point in time. I passed, not without some regrets.

Even pretty straight Majors don't command much value compared to other models in my experience. I had my '69 up on ebay in 2019 for 1800, but even clean with original logo, cosmetics and overall originality there was no interest even with reasonable shipping. To Matthews Guitars comment about the amp stripped of tolex, I don't recall ever seeing many Majors in great condition.

I WOULD like to add a Major to my collection. And I'd recover the head cabinet (if necessary) to bring its cosmetic condition back up to something like it was when it was not an old amp.

No that I have the amp and pulled the chassis I can see it’s steel, so the the aluminum issue is put to rest. As mentioned earlier in the thread by someone, the chassis is the same size as a Marshall chassis. Interestingly there is a Marshall Major for sale on Reverb with the extra two tubes supposedly modified to Blackmore specs. I’m still trying to find a good tech in the LA area.

Come to think of it, one of my friends owns a Major that is believed to be a former Blackmore amp. It was set up with jacks for connecting to a tape recorder for tape echo. Circuitry for that bit of wizardry has been removed, but of course the holes are still there. I'll ask about it.

It's been a few years, but Greg Leon did some great work on a 2210.

A lot of people use Robert Dixon at Amphole, but I don't have personal experience.

I would also trust the guys at Future Music or Caveman Vintage to point you in the right direction.
