    I have a new 2018 DSL40CR (£500) and a used 1997 Mk II Valvestate VS65R (£69).
I love and use them both, but if I could have only afforded the VS65R I would still be happy.

    How low would you go?

I had a VS100 before I bought my DSL40C and overall was pretty happy with it. But after playing both side by side for a while I sold the VS100 as it sounded somewhat sterile compared to the DSL.

Had I not bought the DSL I would have probably answered the VS as I didn’t know any better. But now I would have to say the DSL.

    Early 1990-1992 JCM900 model 2100 and 2500. Typically $600-$750 USD

Yeah early Marshall JCM 900 are great, I confirm. MKIII series today are more expensive than 10 years ago, people has understood that they were great amps for resonable price and cost has increase. Even an early dual reverb with EL34 is absolutely an acceptable amp, you can find It for less than 500 $. A combo even for 400$. Also JCM2000 are in a similar range price. Personally I prefer avoid valvestate and pay 100 or 200 $ more for a tube amp. I can't tell you not so much about new production Marshall, the recent head I have played Is a dual reverb. Oh I forgot.. Marshall 6100, another great underrated amp for 500 $, the only defect Is that If you look at the circuit board, It looks like a personal computer!! Is full of resistor, capacitors, cables, etc.. Excuse my language, I write from Italy!

Hell I was happy with my MG 30, that I had, but I knew better because my first Marshall was the 2104. So I am now with my Origin’s, and Dsl40c’s.
I now can get modern, Dsl40c’s, or old school , Origin’s.
    Cheers

It depends on its purpose, but regardless it would have to have been made in Blechtley. Right now I'm searching for the right JTM60/JCM600 (my favorite) head.

Right now, my TSL60 was only $375 and is one of the favs I have tried. VM's were cheap a couple of years ago...

Bought the Origin 20h when it came out. Not acceptable to me. My first RI JTM45 I got from a GC in Bakersfield for $900. Was beat to death, But man it sure sounded good.

Thinking back now. If they sold it to me for 900. They only paid $450 for it.

    I had an MG30 too - I think I got it in 1999, 2000... I sold that for the VS100 (used).

I just got a 3203 last week and can see that I'd be pretty happy if it was the only Marshall I could own. I need to get a 2x12 now.

Acceptable is subjective but if money was an issue I wouldn’t have any problem with an MG. They sound killer with a boost. I also really enjoyed the VS100’s that I’ve had, especially with a SD-1 as a boost.

I bought an MG once but for the head shell only.

My JMD1 cost $400. A heck of a value for a pro level amp.

DSL15s are a dime a dozen but can be good amps.
