I’ve been looking at demos and reviews online of the 6505 series amps and they sound absolutely monstrous even the 1x12 60 watt combo sounds huge given that it’s a closed back configuration. I know they’re a different gain structure compared to any Marshall amp, but they definitely have caught my attention even though I love Marshall tube amps. A 1x12 combo version of the 6505 has popped up for sale for $350 and I may want to get it. What do you think?
Yup do. I have a 6505 + combo. It does have a nice heavy push with that closed back. Now I like my high gain stuff but I also don't like so much compression that the pick attack disappears. At first I had a hard time getting that clank attack on higher strings. Turns out Presence needs to go way up, like 8. This is with the stock Sheffield speaker. Possibly even a V30 would go better with it but I found it satisfactory with higher presence. Tried a 12AU7 in there too but lost too much gain. In the end, it works great and at lower small bar levels, it still has that nice floor shake. Get it man.
What settings do you have? Also do you think it could get a British type tone out of it with eq in the loop?
I run V30/75 cab with my Ultra 60 & VK2. I love em, That Ultra is the precursor to the next gen...it's my fav amp for brootz but then click a chan..great classic rock,,click clean & strum away. On jensens,,very good american sound. Big fan. I prefer my Peavey's & Supro's these days
It's my guilty pleasure amp - seems hard to dial in a bad sound. I play my 6505+ through a 4x12 loaded with Heritage G12H30s - not exactly the most common pairing, but it rocks! It only took 5 years to break those speakers in though
I guess similar with an eq. I cant say my settings off hand. I gigged it once so far that was November. It has it's own tone but nice n chunky. Depends on your tastes. Wasy to gettoo much gain amd I am a gain guy.
Would pairing it with a Marshall amp be a good idea? I’ve got a Studio Classic 20 head running through a 2x12 and I’m getting into high gain via pedals like the classic JCM800 amps. I may consider selling the SC20H to get a JVM205H.
They're good. One of the industry standards, along with Recto and boosted JCM. The cheaper Chinese 6505+ 112 combos are pretty much always ~$350 though (in USA at least)
I plugged into one once and thought it was a cool amp but bought the 15 watt mini head and had it for a short while, it sounded good, had lots of useless features since you can dial in only one sound at a time so I returned it, but it did sound good.
If you feel the JVM is closer to what you like tonally that would be a good combo. The Classic would be quite different from the Peavey. I want a Classic too though! Different amps.
The mini JCM800 amps are cool amps. They aren’t high gain amps just like the legendary 2203/2204 amps they’re based on. They do require a TS or SD-1 pedal to push it into classic high gain territory and it’s sounds amazing. The mids sound awesome.
I rock a 6534+. Same amp but with el34s. Great amp. But if you watch YouTube demos it always some retard with a 7 string tuned down. Great tones to be had in these amps. First thing I did as soon as I got was play slide in open g. Greasy goodness.
Exactly. Whether that is a good combination for you with a 6505 or not? Can't say. Will the 6505 sound more British with an EQ? It might but it won't sound like a Studio Classic Series.
Love mine. Got mine for just under $300 4-5 months ago. With an eq in the loop, tung sol 5751 in v1, tung sol 12ax7 in v2/v3, tubescreamer out front they are brutal. I bought an older peavey 5150 4x12 with the evh speakers and it sounds awesome!
