This is the sound in my head! What can get me there?

I'm researching 15-20 watt amps that will give me that plexi classic rock, up to early EVH vibe. This particular one is a kit. Although I'm fairly competent with soldering, I'm not sure if I'm ready to build an amp from scratch.

Hard to tell listening to a video, but that sounds like a Plexi with some added gain. You say you’re looking for this in a 15 or 20 watt amp,....I think a SV20 would be one to try.

Do you have any experience with the Marshall Studio series?

Possibly also the SC20, which is a medium gain Marshall, but I think the SV would be a better fit. I would start with those two though, they’re both 20 watts, and both are in the ballpark, tone wise, of the amp you posted.

I started my research quest with the SV20, but everyone says it's crazy loud, even at 5 watts. The SC20 sounds more like an 80s vibe to me.

That amp sounds pretty heavy, any Plexi style amp would have to really be cranked to sound like that without a distortion pedal, sounded closer to JCM800 territory to me. If you are able, I would play the SC20 and the SV20 side by side and see which one does it for you. By the way, what kit is that? I would like to check out the specs so that we could suggest why it sounds like it does.

In the comments, it says that he gave it a Jose type mod.

..... So it probably has an extra gain stage...

You should post this in the Workbench as a separate thread.

Follow OP’s link, it doesn’t appear to have an extra gain stage and no cascading either. There is something extra going on at V1. Maybe someone can explain what that is.

I'd go with a Marshall Studio but depending on your budget if looking to save money Ceriatone makes the Son of Yeti and 2202 and 2525 for like half the price of the Marshall.

The amp in your 1st post is modded (stated in the video title). To get that sound, you need to crank the amp up. I'd start with the SV20 and a good attenuator. From there, try adding some pedals. If that doesn't get you there (it should), you could look into modding the SV20 (cascade mod...). The one drawback to modding the SV20, is there are currently no schematics readily available.

That's what it sounded like to me, that's why I mentioned the SC20.

I originally started my research with the SV20, but I've read it's crazy loud, even on the 5 watt setting. I'd love to be able to get something that doesn't require an attenuator.

The SV20 is not a 50w amp which can get CRAZY LOUD .

This amp sounds damn good, so good I had to crank up my SV20 for a quick tone comparison. I was instantly relieved as the SV easily holds its own.

:slash: Do you have a SV20? Many SV20 owners have not had experience with 50w amps and are shocked by the volume of the Studio Plexi.
