I posted a want ad on the classified section for a speaker several weeks ago. So yesterday I got a notification for a private message from user "easy9032" saying that there's a for sale ad from user "Dough74" for that speaker, and to text him at a phone number 608-561-7362.

So I tried texting and go no reply, and tried calling, and got no answer. So I look over the ads and couldn't find an ad for that speaker. I looked at the user who sent me the message and they were a new user with only 1 post. I messaged and asked where they saw the ad, etc., and go no reply.

So now, I check again, and when I click the link from the email notification, the private message is gone, and it appears that the user "easy9032" is gone.

So I'm wondering if anyone has had strange activity like this. Seems like a scam from someone who is fishing for phone numbers. It seems odd for someone to create an account just to screw with me over an ad that isn't even that new, and then delete the account that quick.

Has anyone had any messages from this user? Has this kind of scam / fishing been seen on the forum before? Can anyone check to see if either of those users mentioned above exist?

    Thanks.

    You know the saying:
"If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck ..."

    Also:
"Trust nothing you hear and only half of what you see ..."

    Likewise:
"If it looks like Ted and swings onstage via a rope and wears nothing but Native American slippers and a loin cloth ..."

    Similarly:
"No matter how high a crow may fly, you can always break a window with a hammer ..."

    Again, in the same fashion:
"Three blind mice, see how they run"... WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY GOING?!

    :hmm: More?

It sounds like a third party seller. Some one trying to sell some thing that they don’t have . This was done on eBay

The seller did reply to my text just a little while ago. Seems like he may have the speaker, but he doesn't have paypal. Is supposed to call me after he gets off of work. If I can talk to him and feel out the situation, I'd like to get it. Not sure yet how to verify that it's not a scam. I feel safer with paypal.

    Six red flags.

What is it with the humans that they'll literally toss out all better judgement, murder each other at the gates of Walmart in less than 24 hours after a day they call "Thanksgiving", on a day they call "Black Friday", to get $20 off the price of a $900 TV as a gift for themselves in celebration of worldwide salvation on a day they call "Christ-Mass"?

Walk away. Forget the whole thing ever happened.
Get a speaker from a major retailer, or at least ebay/reverb.

Guys, it's a speaker that has been discontinued, and is nearlly impossible to find. I've been texting with the guy all day. If he doesn't call me later, the deal is off. He's only asking $70. I told him I'll have him ship it through a local guitar store. I'll verify the store via website and phone call. I'll verify that the store has it, and boxed up with my address, and have them send me a pic. I'll send US postal money order TO THE STORE, and when they receive, they can give the box to UPS, and funds to the seller. I'm thinking approx $20 shipping, approx $25 to the store for doing it, and I get my speaker for under $125, and we all win. Any shenanigans and it's considered mail fraud, since it's a money order. And anyway, I've blown more than $125 on a night at the bar.

Beware, the exact same thing happened to me here once. I posted an ad looking for an amp and someone hit me up said they had one. New user and no PayPal available. He wanted me to send him the money through another pay app only. I asked for pictures and he sent me a bunch that were found on a simple google search. Needless to say I bailed on him and he disappeared on the forum. Your getting scammed.

Ask him where in the U.S. he's located. 608 is the area code for Madison Wisconsin.

The suspense is killing me, what speaker is so rare and worth all this trouble?
I had been looking for a Celestion/Marshall Marque G12T-66 (Haze) speaker for a while.
Found one on Reverb from a music shop in MI.
PayPal, UPS, mint condition, Seventy-80 collecting dust now.

    You're going to get screwed.
I'm sorry but the answer is NO, and that's final.

Sorry for the double post earlier, the first one wasn't showing up for some reason.

Drinkingdeath.... thanks! That is the first substantial answer to what I had asked ... if anyone had this same experience happen to them on this forum before. I know another forum I'm on where people routinely get private messages that turn out to be porn. If this has happened here before, that helps a lot. As I said, I wasn't going to blindly send him cashapp funds without verifying or going through a 3rd party, and if it's a scam, I'm sure he won't call or go through the 3rd party. Yes, I looked up the area code, and it showed WI.

Well-glowin ... It's the G12-35XC Limited Edition. I believe only 3000 were made. I have one and like it a lot, and really want one more. Not having any luck here, on ebay or reverb, and every supplier I could find is out, so I wanted to investigate this if it was a possibility.

Vin ... thanks for the advice and the jokes.

Based on Drinkingdeath having the same experience, I'm guessing the deal won't go through, and that the guy won't call ... or if he does, he won't be able to prove that he has it, or answer questions substantially.

    Thanks again, folks.

PS: Vin, you're in Gettysburg? I love it there, and am hoping to go again this spring or early summer. I have some very cool artifacts from there.

:D I'm just busting balls again bro, you know. I wish the best for all our peeps. Nah, I don't live in Gettysburg, that's a line from a Bugs Bunny cartoon. However, my wife and I went there once or twice and loved it. I watched a vid of someone driving through town on YouTube before we went, and then suddenly you're there and it's like meeting someone famous. :D We've been up around Pigeon Forge 4 or 5 times, drove through a lower part of the Smokies, been to Dollywood - man what a nice place! We hold onto the dream of living in Tennessee once we're able to cut the family ties in Sh*t Town USA (New York). We live in the Upstate right now and the political environment here - as you may have heard - is rather toxic right now.

@vin ... eeeek, New Squork?! I'd get the eff outta there too. Gimme all yer guns, you don't need those big mean things! My cuz moved from Pittsburgh, PA to Tenn, and he loves it. I took my bike down to the Smokies a few years ago and put about 700 miles on it in 5 days, including the Tail of the Dragon & Blue Ridge Parkway. Loved it down there. Wouldn't mind moving there myself, to get outta this effin one horse hick town I'm in. Yes, Gettysburg is great. I have a friend out there and he turned me onto some things to visit and see that aren't open to the public. Did ya see any Marshall amps around Dollywood??:wow: I figure that's all clean solid state chicken pickin' territory. haha

@Dogs ... thanks man. Well, the person stopped replying anyway when I asked him some direct questions, and told him that he would have to prove that he's legit, and ship it through a 3rd party like a guitar store. I won't usually deal with someone when they want to text only, I can tell a lot by talking to them on the phone and asking a few direct questions. I've dealt with a lot of liars in the Real Estate business.

My handle is just a name that I started using back when I first got the internet. It's an old address that I had for a while, and I just picked the name on the spur of the moment because it was easy to remember. Looking back, I should have picked a cool name that relates to the different forums that I'm on.

Still lookin for that Celestion G12-35XC Limited Edition.:wow:

I was just teasing, because, for some reason, these scam accounts use a common word followed by 4 numbers, & your name just happens to be that format...

That account was banned, because there was a complaint from someone else, w/ a similar pitch. They included that same phone # & "member Dough74" (which doesn't exist) in the PM to the other guy.
