I thought you chaps might like to see this. I bought an Origin 5 combo at the start of the year, and knowing that the mdf cab and the farty 8" speaker weren't particularly good I embarked on a lockdown diy project and built a very nice 5 watt 2x10 combo, loosely styled on the 1974X and Bluesbreaker combos. I made the cabinet from solid 18mm rosewood (er..., I chopped up our old unloved blanket box) and inlaid it with brass to emulate the stringing. Once the cab was built I sanded and polished it to within an inch of its life with multiple coats of Danish Oil then Beeswax. Round the back you'll see I shoehorned in a pair of Celestion Vintage 10's. The Origin 5 chassis is pretty much stock, with the exception of wiring in a red LED strip to make the guts glow through the top vent. Yes, I'm a proper tart! I'm posting this to show that with a few basic tools and a bit of patience you can produce something fairly presentable, so if you have any home-build ambitions of your own just have a go. You'll have fun and learn a lot as you go, so just think how good the next one will be! Oh, and yes,... it sounds as good as it looks...
Looks very nice. I think it's safe to say your wood working skills are far beyond anything I would be able to do.
It's beautiful! I just don't understand how they get such nice thick & beautiful planks of wood out of all those stalky rosebush shoots!?? arf arf arf
Very nice work, coming from another woodworker. Sawdust runs in the veins of my family. I've always loved Mesa's hardwood cabinet options. Nice to see that Marshalls look good in hardwood, too. You might want to try a pair of G10 Greenbacks or G10 Creambacks in that. I tried the G10 Greenbacks and was amazed. They really don't sound like 10 inch speakers at all, they souind like a variation on a 12" Greenback.
Hah! If it's any consolation the pull boost function on the volume knob has gone tits up! I can still get it using the footswitch though. Maybe one day I'll replace the Origin chassis with something hardwired,.... but that's for another time.
Nicely done Nick! The rosewood is gorgeous and I like the idea of the brass for the piping. Beautiful wood makes everything better. Russ
Thanks Steve! I think it's safe to say that I'm better with a chisel than I am with a soldering iron! Would love to put something hardwired in it, but I can't solder for toffee,... or rather I should say my solder actually LOOKS like toffee! Maybe I'll get an 18 watt TMB kit ready made?
Cab looks great! Great work! I'm not so sure I like that grill cloth with that finish though. Not trying to dog on it because I do love the cab you built, but if it were me I'd personally go with a different grill cloth. Maybe a brown cane or something? https://sourmashguitarcabs.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=40&product_id=56 But that's just a preference thing and not a deal breaker. Beautiful cab either way!
That would be a nice amp choice for that cab. Mojotone sell a kit for $500. They are easier to assemble than you think, and if you post a thread with your progress you'll get lots of help from members here. It's a very simple circuit. Where are you based?
