Hi guys,

So im pretty sold on the SV20 and 2x12 vertical cab but before i pull the trigger i just want to make sure that it will be loud enough to gig with...?

I used to have a 100w JCM2000 rig and that was actually too loud to really crank it up lol so im guessing the SV20 would be pretty loud but i just want to make sure...

How many of you are gigging with the SV20 and do you find it loud enough...?

Thanks for your time and knowledge - Cheers...

Apparently yes, some are using 20 watt amps to gig with, venue PA systems being what the are these days. If any 20 watt amp is capable to gig with, certainly a Marshall Studio amp will fit the bill, no pun intended.

When I was gigging everyone had 100 watt amps, I don’t recall any bar or venue we played at having a PA system, so,….

Back in my gigging days, it was a running joke if anyone came to an event with an amp less than a 100 watts, we were much more kiddingly cruel in those days than people are today!

That was a long time ago as you can imagine. :D

Thanks for the replies guys,

Yeah in terms of venue size it would just small/medium bars/clubs for the most part and i imagine most would have a PA...

Its good to hear the SC20 can hang with a loud band - that makes me feel like the SV20 should also be able to...

my understanding is that the SV20 has to be louder to get “that sound” as it’s non MV. You should be fine. If anything, maybe too loud

I have both the SC and SV and without an attenuator the SV can be too much for a lot of places. Just like the big brothers there is no variable volume--these amps have one volume level when dialed in the sweet spot.

Outside gigs neither is enough IME--even small get togethers sound just disappears outside

Venues need PA. How does anyone hear vocals?
20 watt amps may be missing some of the large iron thump but in terms of sheer volume they are about 4dB quieter than a 50 watter.
Plenty.
See below.

I agree. I suspect he will have to have an attenuator depending on venue.
I never crank my SC20 here at any venue.

Thanks for the welcome guys...

And yeah im pretty sure most gigs will have a PA so even outdoor gigs should not be an issue i think/hope lol...

I guess im thinking more just 'on stage volume' in that sense - And i'll let the PA do its job haha...

Also in regards to that i will also be using a Two-Notes Torpedo to give the front of house a direct signal too...

As for an attenuator im kinda hoping i dont need one but i will get one if needed for sure...

For indoor small to medium sized venues, it may be too loud without an attenuator. The SV20 has to be loud so get the sound the amp was intended to deliver, so unless you're planning on using it "clean'ish" with pedals, you'll probably need an attenuator. Most small venues, at least in my neck of the woods, don't want loud bands. As a matter of fact, they won't re-book loud bands. Plus, you have to keep the stage volume to a manageable level in smaller venues.

It's plenty loud enough if you're doing a gig with a good PA. Most places don't want a loud stage volume anymore and have a good PA. And since PA gear has gotten so much better over the years and PA's have become a standard for any venue that has live music to have, you shouldn't be without one. I mainly play my Mesa Mark V 25 mini stack and mic the speaker with a Sennheiser E906 right between the dustcap and the cone and run a line out of the DI. And I'll use the new DSL20CR in time also. Don't worry about it and just get yourself a good mic setup to mic the speaker and you'll be fine. And you can run the DI besides to the PA and get the two tones.

So many players are switching to just using fly rigs and modelers with doing nothing but running into a PA now. And it can sound awesome. But it's still not a good tube amp to me and I prefer a tube amp. But this is the trend. And 20 watt to 30 watt tube amps will be what a lot more players who still like tube amps better, will start using I think, when they realize they don't have to break their back anymore hauling a 100 watt head and 4-12. That's my prediction. The only place a lower watt amp can run short of volume is with a really loud playing, hard hitting drummer. But if you are playing with one at practice where you can't also run into the PA, then add on a FRFR or powered monitor for your own personal use to run the mic or DI out of your amp into to give you that extra volume for practice. And problem solved.

Is your torpedo the one with attenuating feature? You should be good.

I’ve just done a run of shows during a music festival week, different size rooms/ stages, all with in house PAs & sound guy,and used my SV20c (10in speaker) standalone or with SV112 extension.
5 piece band covering a lot of ground.
Inputs jumped, high around 4.5, normal 3, & switching between 5/20w depending on room. With LP with 57 classics at low guitar volumes is a nice clean with hair, volume up is great AC/DC type crunch, pushed with pedals for more.
The choice/combination of wattage & cab/s covered all without a problem. Being a music event, the music actually takes precedence, so stage sound level louder than a lot of venues would let you away with.
I too have a JCM 2K DSL100 that’s always been my main rig, and after coming off a run of large outdoor stages using the JCM just prior, I have to say the SV20 was just so fun to play!!
I’m sure you’ll love it 👍👍
