    Howdy,

After I saw a rave review on the Mg30fx, I grabbed one used on GC online. I like it but have not decided that I like it well enough to keep it.

Anywho, wondered if anyone has tried swapping out the 10 inch speaker on one of these little guys.

Side note: I already have a Vavlvestate 2000, the 100 watt Combo version with effects. It would be hard for me to keep both as I see oveap between them.

The mg30fx I have is this model..

I’ve never tried swapping out speakers on an MG but the speaker is a massive tone-shaping component. Granted, buying a decent speaker will cost about half what the amp costs, and if you don’t like the amp afterward, it probably won’t bring you any extra money on the used market.

With that said, I don’t know what the resistance value is for that speaker (as a solid state, I would guess 4 or 8 ohms), but I would look into a Celestion V-type 10” or an Eminence Rajun Cajun. While the former is more “British” and the latter is more “American,” either should be versatile for a variety of sounds and very efficient - meaning you’ll probably get some more volume out of it.

If the speaker is 4 ohms, you’re going to have a much tougher time finding a replacement. You could get away with an 8 ohm speaker in a solid-state amp, but it will effectively reduce your total volume by a fair bit. But DO NOT go lower than the rated resistance - if you have an 8 ohm speaker, don’t drop in a 4 ohm replacement. It will burn up the power amp.

Not sure if this helps, but I have the 15w version of this MG in the microstack (same controls) with stock MG 10" speakers.
Right beside that is my Lead15MS that I've upgraded the speakers to VTjr's.
Swapped cables to do a quicky comparison on the MG15.
Night and day - is as close as I can describe the tone change.
Other 10" speakers available if you have a preference for greenbacks, or V30's.
Just steer clear of the Ten-30's, they suck like little Seventy-80's

    Cliff and Fitz,

I know the V Type Celestion. I like that speaker.

Like I say just curious on other options. I am going to kick the mg30fx around for a couple weeks. If I decide not to keep it, back to GC it goes. I just pay shipping which was $20

Hope you plan to give it away. I've got the 100, 50, and 30 and can't even do that.
Not exactly on topic but you mention this in your first post.

You mean the MG or Valvestate? Idk man. Gear is flying off the shelves. Maybe because we have record inflation. People are spending money Now as it will be worth less as inflation continues.

New gear is selling without much discounts. I assume the same for used, but I have not tried to sell any gear for about a year. I guess I will know once I list it. BTW, I did just list the Valvestate in the classified forum. But local deal for Twin Cities. Not gonna ship this big fella.

I hear ya. Shipping is the biggest issue. Especially for the 100. Fragin' tank. Costs half the amp. They sit in boxes. Maybe one day transistor will go classic vintage. Well, hopefully not too long from now. :ugh:

Cost of shipping kills most deals on cheap used gear. If I ship I usually post on eBay to take advantage of the discounted shipping rates. Ebay, Amazon, Target, Guitar Center... All these big companies negotiate a better shipping rate then what you and I pay.

Yeah the avt 100 watt combo is pretty heavy. About equal to a PV bandit.

The speaker in that amp is 4 ohm.
An 8 ohm will work fine, but with a volume reduction.
    Jensen for a 4 ohm 10"?

I did pop the back open today. (Ended up being kind of a pain, but got the back off.) As SM said it is a no name 4 Ohm. Jensen not my cup of tea. If I did a swap I would look at an Eminence Legend or WGS.

Edit: Celestion V type Jr would be a good candidate.
