Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer, and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult…. All that was required of them was a primitive patriotism which could be appealed to whenever it was necessary to make them accept longer working hours or shorter rations. And when they become discontented, as they sometimes did, their discontentment led nowhere, because being without general ideas, they could only focus it on petty specific grievances.

George Orwell, ‘1984’

:yesway: 1984 was a book of fiction but anyone who can stand back for a second and observe can easily see that it is actually a blueprint.

I have already lost interest in these clowns (the football players).

I have a much more important issue now. I have been robbed of $0.60 from the vending machine here at work since it took my money and did not give me my wintergreen mints.

One of the best quotes ever....!

More like describing the actual surroundings. This is why it can be considered timeless. Most say that he was predicting the future (on some details maybe so), but it is a rather a very astute observation of the present.

I wonder what would happen if the NFL (and not just the players) were to start losing sponsors? :run:

Yeah, if they do that you are going to see mass boycotts by the African American community. That would be a gigantic shitstorm.

Except that when it was written things were nothing like they are now. Sure, there were some distractions but the level of the book vs the level of the present leads me more into the "prediction" camp.

Another "anti white man" hit n run post by one of the most guilt ridden of men.
You have no thoughtful response so you deride deflect and denigrate. You are either illiterate or just a troll. I'm not anti any color and have no guilt about my position here, which if you haven't figured it out is, I think the jackasses like you who don't have anything substantive to contribute but feel so compelled to cloak your ignorance in fake patriotism are making this the huge issue it has become and giving the athletes you claim to hate a bigger venue in which to protest.

Obviously it is you the illiterate one. I have consistently said I don't mind the protest (never even said I hated athletes or sports), I just find the message false. And if you think your snide comments regarding the evils of the white man are substantial, then you are the jackass. You should have laid off the acid and the peyote in the 60s.

It is an allegory. Just like the allegory of the cave. One can say "Plato predicted television!" Sure, it can be seen that way. But as I stated on Orwell: Plato was just making an astute, profound observation of his surroundings, making the story timeless.

This is the part that kills me, where would they go?

I guess any Country they think might be better than the one they are not respecting or any Country that will take them, lol! Maybe people like this would simply find something to complain about wherever they may go? My hunch, yes they would. You know the old saying, "wherever you go, there you are" or "meet an asshole in the morning, they are the asshole, met an asshole all day long, you are the asshole"???
