Slash...#34 #36 #39 Please explain

    Slash...#34 #36 #39 Please explain

    what were these amps? I know one was the SIR and another is his JCM800 that he records with.

    Can anyone give a quick run down as to what makes these amps different? Tubes? Mods? etc

    That article explains 36 and 39...

    But what about 34?

    Isn't that the amp he currently owns and records with? The one they're basing the AFD100 on?

    I want to know the story behind that one.

    34 is a regular JCM 800 that was modded by Frank Levi who was the tech for SIR after Tim Caswell left.

    34 has no affiliation with 36, 39, or Tim Caswell.

    So in a sense the new AFD-100 was modeled after the Frank Levi amp, but the AFD album was recorded on 36, a Caswell amp.

    After Slash tried to steal 39, it disappeared, whereabouts unknown to this day, then Slash stole 36, only to be taken back by SIR a year later.

    The article says 39 was the original, modded by Caswell. 36 was modded by Levi afterwards, modeled from 39 because it was so in demand. And Appetite was recorded with 36, then taken back by SIR months later.

    My question is.. Where did 34 come from and why? Was it another rental or something Levi did for Slash to own?

    Your right, AFD reheasals were with 39, then Slash tried to steal it, so they let him do AFD sessions with 36.

    In the AFD-100 video's i believe Slash couldn't remember where he got 34, but at some point it was a modded 800 by Levi.

    39 was a 70's metalface SuperTrem with the trem tube as an added gain stage, it was the amp everyone wanted when at SIR.

    My own opinion is that Tim Caswell has it on ice somewhere or at least know where it is, we'll probably see it on ebay someday for 4 million dollars.:dude:

    It still amazes me how much attention the amps slash used get.....after all of these years this is still one of the hottest topics in this forum.....Was his tone really that unique? Even if so, does Slash and particularly his amps really deserve all of the hype and attention they get? How many signature models can one artist have based on such a short catalog of music?

    I don't mean offense to anyone who seeks his tone......so please don't take any.........hell I bought a mesa studio and a p.o.s. crest power amp because of kurt cobain,....even though this combo really sounds like shit, I still noodle with it from time to time because I like Nirvana, so I completely understand.

    I am curious to Kurt's rig. What album are you referring to that he used this gear?

    I always dug some of his recorded tones.

    Last night I watched the new Soundgarden box set DVD. Man, that is another one of those bands that captured some outstanding guitar tones in the studio. And I also have to give props to Matt Cameron's drum tracks on the Superunknown album. "Just Like Suicide", that track has it going on for sure . . .

    everything has already been said in the thread, but I can summarize it for you.

    1986-1987: Slash rent to SIR #39 for the AFD Post Production.
    This is a Tremolo Superlead modified by Tim Caswell.

    1987: AFD recording Session. Slash wanted #39 but was already rented, so they gave him a Moded JMP Superlead 59 moded by Frank Levi, called #36.
    AFD was recorded with #36

    Slash tried to steal it, but SIR eventually got back #36.

    We believe Slash has asked Frank Levi to do a similar mod on another Amp.
    this is a JCM800 moded by Frank Levi, and his name is #34. It certainly comes from SIR as well, and Slash may have asked to have on of those moded amps.

    Slash has recorded every album since UYI with #34, including the last one.

    On tour:


    AFD Tour, UYI Tour, 5oclock somewhere tour: Silver Jubilees
    Ain t Life Grand tour, SL2555
    VR: SL2555 for the 1st tour and VM for the last tour.

    Currently he uses SL2555 (backup), Silver Jubilee (Clean), AFD100 (Dirty) and a JCM2000 as well we 've seen on his rig (used for a particluar clean sound of the set).

    Saul did steal it, and had it for over a year, then returned to the scene of the crime to record with said stolen amp.:slash:
