Hey David,

Nice gear!

How does your 800 sound through the 1960BV? Have you ever A/B'd it with a cab with V30's? I know the BV cabs have the Marshall V30's which I hear are slightly different.

I also have a 1960BV and am curious of how the two match up against each other...

Actually I have A/B my JCM 800 2210 in addition to a Diezel VH4 through a Marshall 1960AV, Mesa Over Size Bottom/Standard Size Botom and Orange V30 loaded cab. All of the cabs used different versions of Vintage 30's. To our ears the 2210 & VH4 sounded best through the Marshall 1960AV even though it is a top cab. My son bought it. We got it home and played it next to the 1960BV. The BV has better low end def. So far it is the cab for my amps. I liked the Mesa's too but they start to get into the low mid area than can be muddy when paired with some circuits.

Thanks for stepping up Paul you pretty much nailed my thoughts on the cabs. :)

I have his clips slay man! Appreciate the reply.

You know, your reply reinforces why I would want to keep my BV as is. I am developing a 'complex' sort to speak with my tone. Finding my tone to bright/harsh, although I believe it's either my 2203 (the mod on it is just incredible bright (but in a good way)) but more likely my pickups (Duncan distortions).

I fear a muddy tone (which I don't have, but also don't want to end up with as a result of trying to tame the brightness) so I will likely leave the speakers as is and mess with the pickups, may go back to EMG's (81 in the bridge with the 18 volt mod)...may be my answer.

And smoothness is always welcome :)
and yeah Fortin's tones are super mid and presence focused (i LOVE it!) i know exactly what you mean. my favorite marshall mod of his so far is his modified VM. that amp is recoculous! it's basicaly a one channel Meathead or Natas (4get which).

See my Cobra sounds a lot like his VM mod but it's a bit darker in the top so it's got that basic tone with less top end. My Dragon though sounds like a super gain modified (and added range eq) 2203 and SLO which apparently it IS lol. 2203 crunch and slo lead. add the mesa style EQ and peavey style POST EQ and you got a killer amp:D

alas a Fortin Meathead or Nata and DAR FMB100 are my "if i ever get super rich" amps.

one day i want those, 1 of every 800 head, a 6100le,JVM410H,ENGL invader 100 EL34, and some more Framus' and i'll die happy:D

Thanks for the feedback gentleman, much appreciated :)

Yeah Die, the Cal Modded 800 I have is super bright, but I threw 6550's in it (from EL34's) which helped, definitely more what I am after. I really think (in my situation now) the pickups are what require a change, going to go back to EMG's for a bit.

Yeah Mike makes some killer amps, I gotta check out that VM mod he does I can't say I am familiar with that one. I just hear a 2203KK modded over on Rig Talk and damn that sounded good too, there are just so many killer tones to be had when you get into the world of modding, it's endless....

It's not a room full of amps like Matt has but, here's my collection so far?

Blackstar HT5, Fender Princeton Chorus, Peavey JSX, Carvin V3 Micro, Marshall YJM 100, Hughes & Kettner Metal Shredder and, Digitech GSP 2101

DSCI0292.jpg

They're all tube amps and preamps except, for the Fender. It's an 80's era (U.S.A. made) solid state but, responds like a tube amp. If you turn your guitar volumne down or, pick lighter, it cleans up just like a tube amp. There's something in it that makes it do that. I just recently found the manual for it but, packed it away. I can't remember what it was called?

I either plug into the Mesa cabinet with V30's or the JSX combo which has Greenbacks in it. Don't worry, I use a Hot Plate with JSX amp so I don't blow out the Greenbacks.

Hey Odin69, how do you like the Carvin V3?

I like it but, it's a modern sounding amp. It sounds nothing like a Marshall. It's more like a cheaper version of a Mesa Boogie amp. I tried the new Mesa mini-rectofier out and it sounded good but, not better than the V3 IMO. I think it's about a $400 difference between the Mesa mini-recto and the V3 Micro? You do have to buy the footswitch seperately for the V3. Carvin ships the amp and footswitch seperately so, you will have to pay shipping for both. I think the total was $720.00 shipped to my house?

The V3 Micro has a lot of switches on it, depending on how you use them, it could make the amp noisey. It also has a 7, 22 and 50 watt switch on the back. However, it sounds best set to 50 watts even at low volumne.

If you've been thinking about a V3, check out the full-sized head out too? The big one has midi and two different effects loops, plus a few more knobs to tweak the sound on the front.

My son Alex had a Full Size V3 before settling on the Diezel VH4. The Carvan sounded pretty good, a little fizzy but I blame the redcoats he was using at the time.

Carvin use to have a store in Sacramento, CA. not too far from where I live. I tried the full-sized head out there years ago before they closed the store. I noticed it sounded that way too. I think it was because the tubes needed to break in a bit? The V3 Micro I have, doesn't sound like that at all. Maybe, it's because it has EL 84's instead of the EL 34,s? They do put Groove Tubes in all there amps, not sure if that has anything to do with it?

mine was factory biased at 12ma. i bumped it up to 32ma and it sounded MUCH MUCH better. i still hawked it but i'd own one again.

as for the recto comparison they're not the same amps at all. you can get rectoISH or marshall ISH tones from them but they really don't sound like either imo.

that plays a role yeah. I suspect cold bias. Mine was super cold when i got it and made it sound fizzy but i warmed it up and it was very organic and smooth. the cleans are what i didn't like on the full head. they weren't vontage enough. they reacted like my old triamp cleans.

now i would LOVE to get a V3 Micro as it was my idea (yes really). I sent the idea to Carvin Years ago and they used it and i'm very happy they did because it seems to have helped mainstream them more and i love Carvin!

so how is it anyway? I didn't DESIGN it i just had the idea. I have an H&K Tubemeister right now that's amazing but i still want one of those just because they're kinda my brainchild.

oh that recto thing wasn't directed at anyone. i can't quote people on this pc but i always see that marketing ploy and i know it sells amps but i think they're different myself. closer to e german amp than recto imo.

this is a backup pc,lol.

I have a few Carvins, the old 1984 x-100 head, a MTS 3200 head and 2 combo's, an xv212 and a Belair with the xtra 2 12 cabinet, I like them all except the Belair..muddiest POS I ever bot, I gave it to my brother for free..kept the aux cabinet though. Damn I'm good at buying and HORRIBLE at selling amps.

I like the idea of the small amps, never heard one in person, they seem cool for the $$$$...like all Carvins!
