Probably. I was “in the rink” around 83-84. 11 amd 12 years old. After that, skating was gay
Was at a skating rink birthday party for one of my little playmates in '68. Some new song started playing...."Take a sad song and make it better"......I was truly mesmerized. They played it over and over. I got serious chills when it got to the anthem - coda part. I remember thinking "is this the Beatles?" because they just kept spinning it, and also the flip side, "obla di obla da"
Another time a few years later at another rink across town....I was in LOVE with a classmate, a cute skinny kid named Crystal. I was afraid to ask her to skate or to sit and eat with me. When Melanie's smooth voice came on over the speakers singing "I've got a brand new pair of roller skates" Crystal came gliding over and snatched my hand! After we skated awhile we ate hot dogs and hung out. I got brave and put my arm around her. What a day.
I like women Rollerball! Especially the dirty ones ;-)
This goes to the way back machine!
Awesome Trel! You got "1st base". Did you: 1) Ask each other if they smoked? 2) What time they are allowed to say up until on school nights and weekends? 3) What kind of music each other listened to?
At least around here those were screening questions to find out just how "cool" you or they were. Mess up and answer and get it "wrong" and it could be devastating to your rep. You had best smoked ...you best had said you can at least stay up until 11pm - later began to make you look a God/Goddess with only the "coolest" parents in existence. As far music, Rock was the one and only answer acceptable. Anything else would have meant you are of an unacceptable subculture and are in need of a lot of work to be of the "normal". "Only the correct answers please" was what it was really all about.
Indeed. Didn't wanna be caught after that for sure. Not renting anyway. Having your own and being real good you could squeeze in a couple more years.
My Dr, out of the blue asked me if ld be interested in joining a roller derby team...l must look like a badass...she does too but l wouldnt have thought that was her pastime. I thought about it but didnt follow up...hmmm
I ice skated. Much more manly...
The last place I ever knew that was a skating rink closed up a few year back.
I remember going when I was like in 2nd grade. Then later I got into skateboarding for a few years. Used to order things from a catalog called CSS, I think...
Nowadays I'd hurt myself
There's a roller rink around here that's still open! (when they don't have to close for covid)
I used to go there as a teenager back in the early 80's.
The guy I work with has a daughter that plays in a roller derby league there.
We made them plexiglass covid shields for their snack bar & cashier/rental counters.
Depends if you
Depends. Were they hockey or figure skates?
Bauer / CCM or GTFO.
Doing a triple axel as I put the biscuit in the basket.
Skating was a pretty big thing for us around '80 to '82 or so, but It faded away after that as other things occupied our time.
Bauer Supreme FTW!
I also wore Lange when I was a goalie.
Totally agree. Bauer for me. That was the only smaller pic of them all, unfortunately.
Don't make me pull out my old hockey pictures. Lol.
Best to avoid these though:
I remember them well, but I never learned to skate as a kid. Then when I hit my teens to me and the crowd I ran with it was too much like disco, and wasn't cool..We preferred hitting the woods where we could drink and smoke without fear of getting busted, or hanging out in our older friend's houses and apartments and listening to good rock or the underground FM radio stations!
Good times, those!
I was still in high school when this came out, damm I am old !!
