    Duesenberg guitars come to mind.

I passed on a new Star Player for $499.00 many years ago.

It was very heavy and, IMO, didn't sound good.

Any Gibson with Richlite, robotuners, and an excuse for a nut; and any bolt on PRS. Several Suhrs. All overpriced appointments to worth ratio.

Maybe USA ones are nice, but every import one I've played was tonally dead and resonated about as well as a 15 lb. piece of granite. I swear they use as many dark, opaque finishes as they do in order to mask the utterly shit wood they use.

I would have to say PRSs! I just think they are way to expensive! The ones I have seen and played seemed to be of good QUality but still wow!

    (Update: in my opinion...)

The best new production (i.e.; not vintage or hand-made) electric guitars in the world shouldn't cost more than $2,000 - $3,000. The lower price point should cover all the best quality possible at every point on the guitar, and increasing to the higher price point should cover various levels of additional bling. This business of selling guitars for $2K, $3K, $5K and still having to do post-purchase cleanup is ridiculous. For $3,000 I want them to email me pics of the production process as it occurs and set it up to my exact specs so that insomuch as it is it's possible, when I unbox it I will piss my pants.

Now I'll state a contrast on a different instrument:

I've owned and played one mandolin for 10 years. I paid $1,100 for it new in 2010. I thought that was a CRAP load of money for a little mandolin back then, but I wanted good quality. To my surprise, I quickly found out that at the price point my mandolin was barely at the "intermediate" level. After all these years I recently saw some videos on how mandolins are made. I could not BELIEVE the work that goes into to some of these things, and have a new appreciation for why a luthier or a company like Gibson charges $10,000 for their flagship F5 model.

My thoughts, I'm just sayin' stuff. FWIW

Well, my experience is limited to Squier, Epiphone, Fender, and Gibson. At its price point, I'd call Gibson slightly overrated. Doesn't mean I'm not happy to own one, though.

I dont know about over rated but I think pretty much all USA standard instruments from gibson and especially fender are over priced. I can understand luthier built instruments being expensive but any Fender made on a CNC shouldnt be more than a grand and any Gibby made from CNC shouldnt cost over two.
