I don't think many have actually read the thread. She didn't buy this as a gift for myself....she bought it for her. She bought something she knew that I would want because I play a lot more than her. Since it was extensively modded, her point of view was that she'd rather have something original, or at least able to bring back easily to stock, than something that had holes cut in it for new tubes (that were disconnected). I told her I could make a post here to get some opinions - which I did. She's followed along the whole way. She decided for $2k and as modded as it was, that she'd rather have something else - hence she bought a Vintage Modern.

As for the price I think it’s a little much. I’d guess the same amp in that state would go for $1500-1700 on reverb or eBay.

now the amp humming is another dimension. She got it from GC and when you buy something from a store you expect it to work 100% right? Now you’ve paid $2k + shipping+ tax and now you’ll have to pay more $ to get it fixed. I’ve bought many things from GC used and they show up damaged. Just take it back and they will refund everything including shipping since it is damaged.

btw you’re lucky to have a guitar playing wife who buys gear.

I personally would keep it if it sounds good. I know Splawn does good work and they sound killer.

That amp was not a 'keeper', but your wife certainly is!! With the mods, the holes, all those orange drop caps, etc., you guys made the RIGHT choice, in my opinion. I hope you enjoy the Vintage Modern, and don't let go of that woman. Good ones are hard to find!

It has sentimental value now, who cares if you save a few hundred bucks. I'd rock that thing all day. It's like she bought you an old car. Now decide together how to fix it up and enjoy the project. Keep it around for the kids to shred on after you're gone. :) I love that amp already LOL.

I would say you have one of the greatest wives in the world, only superseded by mine! (I admit to a bias). She’s a level-headed woman.

Great wife, bad amp. Knowing what I can buy for $2000, (+ several hundred more to bring it back) I would send it right back. Then kick back together, take your time and shop around for the one you both REALLY want. You'll end up with a great amp, have a great time together doing something you both love, and a lasting memory of the adventure you took together.

Either that, or be a man. Sell the amp for dope money, do her sister, and make her clean the house! Ha, ha, ha.. I'M KIDDING!!!
SHE is the keeper in this little story, without a doubt! Amps can come and go, just a toy. In fact, for about the same money you are spending you could pick 2 new amps custom made. Design a "his & hers" set in special colors together, something you both really dig. Then get Nik at Ceriatone to build them to your spec, your needs, your colors. You will end up with 2 super nice keeper amps, as well as a very sweet keeper wife.

Worked this time though! If I knew crap about amps I might not have to ask every question imaginable! Up next: Will my wife like a Vintage Modern?! Her 4x12 came today - damn thats nice though.

Remember the rule: Happy wife, happy life!

Now you both are going to have to get yourselves full stacks and learn to riff in harmony.

Being single I just settle for running two stacks in stereo.
