1988 Model 88's are the Holy grail of the Charvel Model series, IMHO. Mahogany body and a reverse headstock.

Those are so sexy... the sharper body, finish, fret markers and that reversed Jackson headstock... wow!

    Congrats, bro!

Born, '89? I graduated '88. It's no wonder now why you have such spirits. Lol.

    Nice and clean!

An insurance company bought me a [I think] 87-88 model 4 HSS with FR in black to replace a stolen Tele deluxe [nicest neck on a fender - so very close to the Jackson it had to be a mistake by Fender]. First experience with the FR and I've been a fan ever since. I keep thinking I'm going to build a pretty body for it...

Here's a tip. You have the oversized pickup ring in there right now.

You can get a covered Jackson pickup that will fit snug in there. I have all sorts of Jackson pickups - J-50Cs, J-80Cs J90Cs, the dual rails one. They all sound good to me. I can't give you an exact description because my Model 1 neck doesn't have a body, and my other J/C guitars are different builds / scale lengths.

Or you can get a DiMarzio regular or F space and press fit or glue a Jackson cover on it. You can fit the Jackson covers on regular spaced Duncans but not F spaced. I have a Model 3 I just put back together with the Duncan Mayhem set in it. I just pressed the covers on and they stay snug.

Or you can go to fretsonthenet.com and get an oversized pickup ring for whatever sized pickup. I had him make me one for an EMG where I have an 81 and an S in a Fusion Deluxe body.

I have EMGs and passive pickups in many guitars. I tend to go passive most of the time, but when cranking the gain, the clarity of the EMG's is a good thing.

I have the Super D in two builds - an old RG550 and a Dave Murray build with 70's era pickups. Super D's tend to be more "universally" liked, where other pickups can be hit or miss. i.e. The Super D is a safe bet.

    Lovely find @Maggot Brain.

I had a Charvel Model 4 (Kahler) back in the day but had to sell it to buy the parts for a copy I made of it.
I swapped out the J-90C in my '89 Charvel Fusion Custom for a Dimarzio 'Tone Zone'. Massive improvement IMHO.
But as the TZ came out in '91 it can't be period appropriate! :(

BTW the Dimarzio PAF Pro, Dual Sound, Super 2 and X2N are all of their pre-'89 pickups (in current production).

Also there was a Charvel in 86 that had a Jackson trem under FR patents. The one on top of page 2 has one I believe.Horizontal fine tuners.Sorta t shaped retainers. Then in later years they went to a regular FR design.I have another Model2 with it .Works great.Unique take on the FR design.

The Jackson JT6 Licensed FR was first available on '87 Charvel Model series guitars. Some people prefer design due to the tuners being located on the back instead of on the top. I have one but have never installed or used it.

Ha! Awesome Deftone! I remember the trem manual said I may have to have the knife edges re done but they've been fine for more than 30 years.

That thing is gorgeous, in the early 80’s when I first caught sight of the one pickup, one volume knob, I wanted one badly, congrats on a fine birth year axe.
I would love to have my birth year Flying V ... 1958, ain’t never going to happen though.
But I can still admire yours.
    Cheers

I think I've decided on the Super Distortion!

The PO offered to sell me the J90C... Super annoying he didn't include it. He got the sweet end of the deal, traded up and I almost felt insulted that a few days later offered to sell me the original pickup. I should have asked if he had it but hindsight is 20/20.

I think the DiMarzio will slay in this beast.

yeah that top edge is gonna cause some pops and creeks lol.
dont know what it is about those long screws there but they were known to
seize up and snap. be careful with them and dry lube them
    every so often.
