Whew lads. I did it this time. If you saw my thread before about me ordering several Epiphones to try out - then you know I've been searching for a new Les Paul. I gave up on the Epiphones, and ordered in several Gibsons. I found a 2016 Gibson Traditional that I enjoyed immensely - and then found a 2020 Gibson Standard that is gorgeous in Heritage Cherry - and then I decided to keep both of them. However - I realized I could get a historic and save about $1000 - so I figured I'd order in this R8 and see what it was like..... WOW. This guitar sings. It became a no-brainer. The fit and finish just has a unique feeling that makes it feel very different than the Traditional and the Standard. I can't even put it into words. I can't wait to get some sunlight and take it outside to see it shine!
What an absolute beauty, congrats !! Aaand i love your nickname ....... haha I actually sang that one at a karaokebar ....Lmao
I rike it. I rike it a rot. Looks like you found a new best friend. Really great looking R8. Nice color, grain and chocolaty fretboard. The Custom Shop Historics are different beasts for sure. The bestest sounding ones have a dry, woody tone. How much does it weigh? (The way I measure at home is I weigh myself while holding the guitar, then weigh myself again without it and subtract the difference. Digital scale only.) Mine's a 2011 plaintop in Sunrise Teaburst, a bit of a pig at 9.6 lbs. I've had a few of them, this one's a keeper. I nicknamed it "R8" because, well... it's an R8.
That is stunning!! Beautiful finish. I have 2 x 2016s, they are great guitars. I just wish they weren't all VOS. I would get one in that finish but....
Why JR? Why would you want a guitar that's made to look, sound and feel like one from the late 50's to look shiny and new? (why) BTW - they're not all VOS, they come all shiny like new now too. Not sure if that changes the price either way though. I don't like 'em to look road worn, just old. My buddy's R9 is a non-VOS. To me, it looks odd. .
That's a beautiful guitar. I would love to have one. Great choice on it and I'm sure you'll get years of enjoyment from it. I like that they can come VOS or shiny and new looking. It's sort of like a classic car to me. Some prefer them to be restored to better than showroom, while others prefer originality with a touch of patina. In a classic car, I prefer a high level driver rather than a showpiece. But in a guitar I prefer shiny and new, with any patina earned by me or the prior owner. I'm totally cool with others having different preferences and both ways have their merits.
Congrats on a beautiful instrument, Play the finish off it and that my friend is the true magic of it.. Cheers Mitch
I think the historics can be great instruments - my R0 is a keeper, sure I had to replace the unpotted BBs with BKP Mules but they feel and sound very good. I have not found a non CS Les Paul as good, although I hear good things about the 2020 and up versions Enjoy - good call.
Very jealous. A lemontop R8 is def on my list as well. Historics are just next level instruments IMO. I’ve been enjoying Jim Wagner pickups in both of mine—if you get the itch I recommend. Also loved the Duncan Antiquities—good fit
