Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde and More Announce Generation Axe Supergroup and Tour

The term “supergroup” gets thrown around on a regular basis these days, however, a new tour featuring some of the greatest guitarists of all time is about to truly give the term a whole new meaning.

Introducing: Generation Axe, featuring Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi.

Beginning April 5 in Seattle, Generation Axe: A Night of Guitars is hitting the road for 26 performances in North America. Tickets for all shows go on sale February 19. That's this Friday, folks.

"The Generation Axe show is a unique performance of five fiercely talented guitar players coming together to create a six-string extravaganza that is sure to amaze and delight,” Vai says.

The Generation Axe fan experience will go way beyond simply gathering five guitar greats on one stage to jam. Each tour stop will include a variety of collaborations by the five players, including everyone performing together as one cohesive band with a rhythm section including Pete Griffin (Dweezil Zappa, Stanley Clarke, Edgar Winter) on bass and Nick Marinovich (Yngwie Malmsteen) on keys. Vai, Wylde, Malmsteen, Bettencourt and Abasi will perform songs from their various catalogs and join forces on some well-known songs (as well as probably a few unexpected, unearthed gems).

Making this rare tour experience even more special, Generation Axe VIP packages will be offered, giving fans access to these guitars masters and exclusive one-of-a-kind memorabilia. A front-row package (including a meet & greet), a meet & greet package and a VIP tour package will be available. For more information, visit generationaxe.com.

    That'd be another interesting tour...

I'm not sure how this will work. Of course throwing these names out there, sounds great. A bunch of great players. I never heard of Tosin before, but he's pretty badass!

I'd have a hard time imagining some of these guys allowing any space for each other. Maybe somewhat of a super collider of sound, might be sensory overload...

    You never know though...

but, that guy Tosin is a great find. If nothing else, this announcement introduced me to his playing!

Great find? Dude's like the John Petrucci of the modern metal movement. He's really well known.

If there's one effect I never got along with it's the wah pedal. But I am considering his new sig Marc IIC+.

I think the thing is figuring it out. They are pretty versatile & can be used very expressively. If you use high gain, you need to be careful w/ the frequencies (of the wah it's self), &/or balance the amount of gain for use w/ it.

I'd imagine that Petrucci helped design that wah w/ the Mesa in mind, so maybe you would get along w/ it. Still, it's not something to use all the time, or it can become either annoying, or at best less effective...

I think it's more the wah fell out of fashion (kinda) during my formative years so I never developed a taste for it. I did buy one when I was 16 though for that Hendrix thing... I still have it somewhere in a box. It's a mid '90s Cry Baby.

It makes me wonder about the state of guitar players today; if this is what it takes to make a decent buck. Like when they started doing double and triple bills with KISS and Aerosmith, or Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick to fill the seats. But 5 or 6 virtuoso guitar players in one night seems like a stretch. I dunno, but I hope it's a success.

I always found the wah very effective when used tastefully. Scholz made a career out of it (practically). Schenker used it wisely. Hammett, no so much.

I'm afraid that would be a mess. It will be interesting to see though.

I could be down for the fest. :yesway: Honestly all that showboating makes me want to take a nap instead of mosh.

With that comment in mind, that would mean that Meshuggah IS the spearhead modern metal movement. The rest of the D'jenty kids just buy 8 string guitars and closely emulate Mårten Hagström.

    Duh-djentdjent-*palm* A technique IS not a genre!

    Love the sarcasm! :D

Maybe it's not so much that ZW's on the same level as the others, as much as it's about variety. I know I couldn't listen to all those guys for 3 hrs.
