This is totally, 100% @Jethro Rocker ’s fault. He went out and posted a NAD of a beautiful blue SC20H with matching cab and a very interested cool as fuck cat sitting on it. I was toast after looking at that. I bought a like new used one in back on Reverb for $825 and it arrived Wednesday. There is lots of good stuff written about these amps. I have nothing new to add other than Marshall hit another home run! I love it. I have a Maxon 808 OD in front for a clean boost if needed and a delay in the loop right now. Sounds great. The Fx is great- no tone loss. The 10 inch stock celestion V-type works out well. When these came out I was disappointed that Marshall didn’t use a 12 inch Greenback. I read where Marshall claimed they tried all kinds of speaker combinations and their team decided the V-type sounded best. I didn’t buy that until now. The amp definitely is a worthy member of the JCM800 family of products and the SC20C is a fantastic amp. Thanks Jethro!
It smokes into my Orange 412. Great amp. I prefer the iron on the 100 watter. Definitely a difference. Still? A fun amp! Congratz!!!
Sweet! These sound great, I had the same thoughts about the greenback though. I think it's more likely that the V-type sounded better while the executives were watching and aware the V-type was half the unit cost Anyway, the V-type is a great speaker in its own right and makes this a great portable practice combo to take around and you can always add a greenback in a 1x12, 2x12, etc... the beauty of a small combo with external speaker jacks!
Yeah screw JethroRocker, he's a terrible influence. Why would you listen to him in the first place ? Heaven forbid you end up with an amazing amp. Lol. Well done Jethro, your a generous man.
I'm fairly certain that the when this amp series came out, the question about how easy, or not it is to cram a 12" speaker came up. I'm not sure that the question was ever really answered, except with speculation? The fact that the question doesn't come up repeatedly is a fair indicator that most owners of the SC20C and SV20C are fairly pleased with the 10" V-type. Good 10" speakers tend to have a really great mid range "honk" right where a great guitar sound should! And while they may lack a tad of the real bottom end that a 12 can provide, its not unusual to require being careful with 12s to not step into the frequency range best covered by the Bassist. My taste would go for the SV20, but the couple/few SC20s I've played have certainly been most of what I recall many JCM800s being! Except for a small drop in volume, from like a 2204, or similar. Either way, HNAD! Long May You Rock!
About the speaker... there need to be a certain ratio cone/baffle area, or you lose low end... I'm sure there is one or two hifi buffs here to explain it, but look at you stereo speakers... if the cone takes up too much of the Baffle, you end up with boxy sounding amp... this is also why people often advice against replacing the speaker in a Fender champ with a bigger speaker. It makes it sound smaller. J
I running a greenback in mine now im digging the mids more I still have to test it more i been breaking ina green in the SV combo
I find it best playing loud with the master at 7 to 10 and gain at 7 to 8 thicker tones and dude try a chasetone EP3 preamp pedal the amp sounds bigger more dynamic 3D ish tones
Congrats! Jethro Rocker was playing a bit of dirty pool by adding the cool as fuck cat to the pic. Hooked me too until I remembered that the dial on my gear fund is on empty.
Congratulations HNAD Those are quite the smallish beast of an amp. And anyone would be proud to own, Jethro you sly devil, going to have to get Marshall to kick you down some swagg my friend
Ha ha ha!! Hey I didn't open your wallets and take out the money! But I certainly don't mjnd helping others spend theirs!! Glad the combo is working out well. I have only heard good things about them. Sounds like they did their homework and the 10" is the ticket!! I need to take more gear pics with Spirit the cat's help!
Congrats on the new amp @Deep Purple fan! It’s a sweet amp for sure,...and that 10” V-type speaker must be a real gem in these Studio combos, because lots of folks leave them in. It seems that most everyone that owns one of these two Studio combos, (SC20, SV20), are fine with 10” speakers in there.
