Guys, today I made an impulse buy: new old stock Marshall JCM 900 model 4100 Dual Reverb re-issue from 2008. It is the 100W version with 4x 5881 power tubes. Sound good even with Master Volume on 1. Can't wait to crank it up real good!

The price was EUR 767 or $902, with 24 months warranty from the store I bought it.

Can you tell me is it possible to replace the 5881 tubes with EL34s or something else? Is it worth it? Any tips/tricks with this beast are welcome!

Congrats on that amp. Not straight in , it would Need some mods to the circuit and biased for the EL34 but I prefer the version you have. So much info on here .

The general thought is if you want a EL34 trade or buy that amp.

I really miss my 4100 dual reverb . Sweet cleans and killer tones . Put a jumper in the effects loop or a eq. But I like it just with a jumper.

Will try the jumper and the trimmer for the FX loop level too, but what do I get with the jumper? Bypass the FX loop?
I have a BOSS GE-7 EQ, will definitely give it a try in the 900!

Try a voodoo lab giggity pedal in channel 2 and it’ll take any fizziness out and do whatever you want it to do.

jumping/connecting the FX-loop send & return adds a little bit more bite/aggressiveness. I think your fx loop level should likely be turned all the way down to 'low' I'm assuming.
Just try it without and with jumping the loop and see what you like better.

Yes , plug a short instrument cable In or the boss eq . Watch the highs on the eq.

I use the GE-7 in the loop; It removes the harsh highs and adds some bottom end beef on the much maligned channel B, it rips.

Not to hijack the thread but whats the Giggity pedal do ? I need another pedal like I need a hole in my head but I'm intrigued. Thank you Buzzard in advance.

Although not a 4100 i have three 6100's ( one EL34 and two 6L6GC) and a Jube reissue that can take both those tube types and more and my opinion is it doesn't make enough of a difference to convert it.
6L6 will hang with an EL34 and in some areas surpass it.

Hey, @K2JLX, can you share your GE-7 settings and did you also adjust the FX Loop level with the trim pot on the back?

Yes, I have the loop level adjusted to 11 o’clock. Attached is what I use on the GE7 with the 4100.

    Enjoy the amp.

I agree with everyone that says jump the FX loop. I dont know, or understand, why it works, but it does.

Don't buy into the EL34 v 5881 talk. Mine is an early 90's 4100 I had converted to EL34's. While it is a better sound, its not a huge difference and I wouldn't do it again. Enjoy your amp and crank it the way it was meant to be played.

Congrats my friend! Nice gig ya have there.

What the consensus on the 4100 vs 4500? 100 vs 50 and that's it? I've had my eyes on the 4500 for $600.
