Damn, what a badass little amp. Grabbed it from a local and took it to a 3hr jam without a hitch, in fact just by lookin at it, those were the most hours it has on it. It seriously looks brand new and sounded awesome. I just got a old Reverb 12 recently and that was my first Marshall in a while, but what that little practice amp did was make me want a real tube Marshall more, why i got rid of my 900 I'll never figure out but this little guy is one step closer to redemption. Anyway, enough emotional baggage, this is a KILLER amp y'all, touch me in the morning, then just walk away......... I still love my little Reverb 12 too, the more the merrier right?
These little heads are amazing. I bought one used for cheap as a bedroom amp only to use it for recording because it sounded so good. They have that classic Marshall sound to them. They're more 800 sounding then a DSL. Nice score !!!
You've owned your new Marshall for at least a half a day now,.... and you haven't tried the overdrive channel yet?!?! just kidding buddy! Congrats man, enjoy your new amp in good health.
I love mine. I've made a couple mods and changed a few tubes, and it is by far my second favorite Marshall. It sits on top of a full stack, and I still cannot believe how nice this amp sounds. And LOUD too. For a 15W amp it will crank! Definitely one of Marshall's sleeper amps...
Yeah, i dimed it through the 2x12" for a second and was really surprised at the volume, easy loud gig volume. What mods have you done? I was already eying the real estate taken up by the DSP effects and pondering a 2nd channel EQ, if thats even possible. I was also gonna try some vintage 5881's in it after some research. They have a matching 1x12" cab there too, not real sure i need it but i might grab it anyway, you know what speaker it came with?
I had one for a while, and while the clean channel was quite good, I found the gain channel to be to saturated, too fat. I thought, it might sound great with a single coil guitar, Strat, whatever, but not (modern-ish) humbuckers. The bright switch helped a little, but it just wasn't what I liked. I converted it to something JCM800-like, and made the bright switch a small boost. Then it turned into something, that I consider to sound like a Marshall should. I really liekd it a lot; only sold, because I have too many amps But nevertheless, enjoy it. What I don't like may be your dream sound
I know I sound like a broken record, but clean boost the front end of the hot channel..really tightens it up..and I clipped the little cap on the gain pot, but it's been so long damned if I can remember which one. If I ever find time I would like to put an effects loop in it as well. I think there are points already on the pcb for this iirc. And a choke..too many amps..too little time.
Hey Gunner, you could cexchange the little cap for something like 1nF, then the lower gain setting would tighten up. Or I would use something like a Tubescreamer, gain on zero, no boost, and Tone on full, to filter out lows. Or an equalizer, filter out the lows. That'll tighten it up. I think the amp has so much more potential than as it is stock. Of course this is for humbuckers, and of course my taste!
I've modded mine a little, a new choke and a different OT to add a 4-ohm output. That plus some new finals and NOS preamp tubes turns this forgotten little head into a real fire-breathing beast. It's too bad I don't play this one that much.
Just got a 50w,16 ohm Avatar alnico 12 to put in one of my 1x12 Sonic cabs, I've already played my Lead 12 through it and love it, next up is Hazel. Its a killer speaker y'all.
