    Continuing my thread from yesterday...
    Class 5H vs. Origin 20H ??? | MarshallForum.com
I put the amp on my gear card last night and picked it up this afternoon.
    c5-1.jpg c5-2.jpg
If anyone has been inside this amp, it was a long time, and a thick layer of dust ago.
Swept it out with a clean chip brush.
Here's some gut shots - I don't think anything has been altered.
    c5-3.jpg c5-4.jpg c5-5.jpg
There was a Bugera 12AX7 in V1, a white label Marshall in V2 & an unreadable label EL84 in the power tube slot.
    c5-6.jpg
Deoxit in all the jacks, pots & sockets.
The little monster gets some nice Marshall growl anywhere past 9 o'clock on the volume.
Swapped out V1 for a new Marshall branded red label & V2 with a Marshall gold label to see if it would clean up at all.
I'd say the new tubes are crisper, but still lots of attitude.
Going to order a new EL84 & just have a fresh set.
    Cleaned up nice.
    c5-7.jpg c5-8.jpg
Here's my version of the head on a Haze A cab.
    c5-9.jpg
And what I think may be it's new home on top of the Purple Haze stack.
With the Bad Cat & MXR 10 band, the little bugger cranks.
    c5-99.jpg
And if you're thinking what I'm thinking?
Yes, there's enough purple left over...

    I liked new production mullard el84 for a power tube, sino/shugang in V1 and a JJ 803s in V2.

The mullard RI El84 has very little headroom, but it removes some of the tubbiness, and smooths out the crushed glass.

    Congrats!

    OK, here's my inept review.
    Wow, just wow - speechless.
This amp sounds nothing like any of my other amps.
The growl is simply awesome - straight in - edgy clean to downright bad ass roar.
There's no clean Fender chime in this box.
The Class 5 on it's own into a 1x12 is not what I call loud.
But into the Bad Cat V2 and the two 1x12s it's like a 100w master volume amp with the Class 5 volume like a gain knob.
TMB knobs are responsive and can contour the tone for a variety of tunes - nothing complicated and easy to dial in.
Old school overdrive tone unlike the DSL, 6101, or any pedal that I own, and a growl that the Origin can't get to on it's own, even cranked.
I may have to try a little of my favorite chorus/reverb in the BC loop, but for now I'm simply totally satisfied with the little 5 watter.

Glad you like it! It's a cool little amp, I used to have the combo but sold it because it was dark. I think the head is the way to go with that amp. There's lots of cool mods to do too. HNAD!

The Class5 is the little engine that could. It's got delusions of grandeur about being a Tone Bender.

Congrats. I had a couple of those.

Fyi if interested, a Treble Booster works very well if you want to boost it. Straight in my favorite was paired with a Blue Alnico. I used my Les Paul.

I've owned both, and the C5H is the way to go. I paid $200 out the door new ... they've increased in price since their release, and I think you got a good deal on it. I've owned mine since the day I brought it home, and it's an amp I'll never give up.

This kid takes a C5H into God Mode ...

    Yes, it is.
There's a handful of them listed on Reverb in the $500-$700 range, but recent sale stats are more like $325-$475.
Still think I got a good deal.
Local pick up with no shipping is always lighter on the budget.
Rationalized justification for a new set of tubes from tubesandmore.com.

    That kid is spot on.
VH crossed my mind when I was playing around with this amp.
It actually gets a loud sound at TV volumes.
Running it through the Bad Cat makes me think "did I just buy a $315 gigantic tube pedal?", but some of you guys spend that sort of ching on OD pedals, so wtf.
You should post this vid in that brown sound thread...

    Congrats, sweet looking stack.

The stock EL84 that came in my C5 head is VLVE-00093, with Marshall branding on it. Not sure who the manufacturer was. In case you're curious.

I just ordered a standard JJ EL84 for the power tube.
The one in the amp had nothing but some unrecognizable paint remnants of a label, but it was also cooked into the rubber dampener ring - I had to cut it free with an x-acto.
I also ordered a pair of JJ 12AX7S-MG tubes for the preamp.
They are supposed to be "mid-gain" for an AX7.
This amp has almost no clean with the volume past about 2, and it's kind of an edgy clean at best.
I'm going to see if these tubes clean it up without stepping down gain factors to an AT7, AY7, or AU7.

Very cool. Probably minimal tonal changes between brands with a single EL84 in a 5w amp, and the stock one might very well be a JJ anyway. Enjoy yer new toy!

A C5 and a Bad Cat Unleash were made for each other. Congrats on the new baby monster!

IIRC Stock tubes in mine (V3- the last version made) were a JJ EL84 and two shugang/sino. All Marshall branded of course.

I remember when these were in the stores, I liked the combo and considered getting one but never got around to it. Then the heads came out, they were dirt cheap when they first came out and out of nowhere they realized they could get more for them and jumped the price up $150 or more then I decided I wasnt gonna bother. Cool amps though :yesway:
