Lets open it! haha i am ready. Genuinely intrigued...

Honestly, if you can play the songs, I think you can ballpark it with any number of Marshall amps. Hell, if you were to plug into his original amp, it's still gonna sound like your interpretation. I can coax what I think is a pretty nice "brown sound" out of my YJM100 (which is closer to your new amp in that it's based on an early 70's SL), but I actually prefer the "brown sound" I dial in on the SL5 ... go figure, right?

Well, there’s a lot of debate about what got Eddie that tone. Some things are pretty solidly known

His amp was a ‘68 with 12000 serial number. The exact serial is known, but I don’t remember it.

He used Sylvania 6CA7 output tubes

On VH1 he used JBL speakers mixed with Celestions, which is a big part of that high-end he gets on the first album.

He used a variac. There’s still some debate about how exactly he used it. Some say he always set it to about 90V, others say he changed it depending on how loud he could be in whatever room he was playing, almost like a master volume.

There are still a lot of questions about the amp. Was it modified? When was it modified? How?

All I can figure is that the SLP will get you in the ballpark. It’s a good foundation, whether you want to put together the pieces to cop EVH, or build your own sound.

Very interesting. I have been able to get very close to the sound with my SV20H and a Boss GE-7, be curious to see if the 1959 SLP brings it even closer?

Either way I'll be able to report back after tomorrow. Going to be a looong drive hope it's worth it ;)

Plug it into a greenback cab, plug into volume 1 input (leave unused vol 2 on 4) turned to 8, turn mids to 10, treble to 8, bass to 4, presence to taste and plug in with a humbucker equipped guitar
You will need either a pair of greenback 4x12s or one cab and your attenuator
At those settings the earth will move, less than that it will be sharp, spiky and hard to manage unless you use pedals

curious how it will compare to Marshall SV20H in terms of tone. Anyone know what year they are based on 1968/69 circuits?
Will report back with pics tomrorow
The Studio amps are a bit more lo-fi sounding to my ears. Not sure how to explain it, but that's what I hear when switching between the 100w and Studio amps. Not knocking the Studio amps, as they're good for what they are.

Congrats! I have one from 1993 that I picked up in December. It was a great sounding amp from the get go, but being a 30yo amp, it needed some TLC. I tracked down some NOS tubes and while my tech had it in to replace some tired parts, I had him mod it to be more in line with 68 specs. It sounds fantastic. I'm running mine on a Fryette as well (such a great piece of gear). I run the amp (and ps100) into a Bogner os2x12 cab with Scumback m75's and I legit lose track of time. I've tried the amp with a few different speakers and the m75's were instantly "it." Saving up to put four in my 4x12 cab next. Gear is fun!!

Soon to be new amp day: Marshall 1959 SLP Reissue 2005.
After messing around with an SV20H I have become plexi obsessed so thought why not get the real deal. The question is coming from the SV20H is there. anything I need to watch out for or be aware of ?

Dude I got the same story, congrats! Mine is a 2000 reissue so the same amp, the guy I got it from put a ppimv in it, not bad but I got a power brake to try with it and much better! I have a creamback 65 2x12 to go with it and it sounds great! :yesway:

Youre gonna need an OD pedal with the 1959 to get high gain.
