    Hi there!
I own a DSL5CR and I like it but I'm constantly thinking about replacing it with something with 12" speaker. I play at home, so I really appreciate the low power mode. I'm thinking about 40CR which has 12" speaker, crunch channel also sounds interesting and it can be switched to 20W mode. On the other hand, maybe should I try some head with 2x12 cab? But which one then? I play on strat, 70% time using the clean channel but I also like to crank up the gain and play some rock. I was also thinking about Fender Custom 68 Deluxe Reverb but this one is much more expensive and does not have the OD channel.

I'm really an amp and pedals guy, so please don't recommend me any amp simulators etc :p

Why do you want a 12" speaker if you like the DSL5CR low power mode?
Larger speakers need to be louder to sound best, and more of them in a 2x12 isn't going to make the situation better.
Perhaps just a better speaker than the Ten-30.
There are lots of other 10" speakers that have great clean tones and would break up nice in a 5w combo when pushed.
I have VT-jrs in my G15MS, and I've heard good things about the 10" greenback.

    And, :welcome: to the forum.

    :welcome: Welcome to the Forum!

If you play a Strat and use pedals, I would get the Deluxe Reverb from the choices you mentioned. Personally, because I play at home too, I got a 68 Custom Vibro Champ and my single coils just sing with it and it takes pedals well. 5 watts is just right for my situation.

I also had a DSC5CR for over a year - I think the clean channel sounded very good with my Strat. I thought the stock speaker sounded good, but I put in a Greenback which improved the red channel quite a bit.

Welcome to the Marshall Forum @bertas55!

    I don’t have any experience with the Dsl40cr, I do own a Dsl1hr though.

From what l’ve learned about the 40, from many owners of the amp, is that it sounds excellent at low volumes. Some say it’s the best sounding Dsl for low volumes!

If you’re real happy with your Dsl1cr would you consider just buying a 1-12 or a 2-12 to play it through?

Or do you really want to upgrade to some degree, and/or get another amp?

What’s your budget and what kind of music do you play?

    Thanks for welcoming me :welcome:
I don't have a strict budget. I think that I can spend on it about 1200 USD and it doesn't have to be brand new. When it comes to the music its quite wide - Hendrix, John Mayer, SRV, but also G'n'R, Billy Talent, sometimes Metallica. I think that Marshall DSL is the most versatile amp, that's why I was thinking about DSL40CR.

Well if you want more than just a speaker upgrade, the 40CR seems to be a very versatile amp.
I don't have one, but I've got the 20HR and some MX112 cabs.
Your budget may even get you into range of a used Studio SC20C, SV20C or 2525C.

Hmm.. That may be a good idea, I'll take a look at the Studio series. What if I would like to go into a head + cab option? Is it any good for a home usage? Can you recommend something in my budget?

40CR would be more versatile, still sounds good at low levels, lots more options tonally if that is what you might want. Plus the option to crank er at a jam compared to the 5.
If you like DSL tones. Different somewhat from Studio series.

    Head/cab in your budget?
    DSL20HR & Mx212A
Marshall DSL20HR Bundle - Head and MX212AR Cabinet Bundle | Sweetwater
or single channel classic tone (great with pedals)
Marshall ORI20H Origin Bundle - Head and ORI212A Cabinet Bundle | Sweetwater
Well under budget - plenty left over for a pile of new pedals! (or some better speakers)
I have both heads and can't pick a favorite.
And to live up to my reputation, I have to say, you need both...

I can attest that the 40CR is a very versatile amp.
It is still full and meaty at low (even whisper) volumes thanks to the larger cab and global MVs.
But to get the most from one I would recommend you stretch your budget to the 6-button PEDL-91016 footswitch and an OD pedal like the Boss SD-1 too.

The 6-button footswitch is self explanatory as it is the only way to access all four channels as you play without MIDI.
It also allows for MV switching and control of the FX Loop.

It sounds like you won't want to live there, but the Ultra RED channel in particular is problematic when it comes to extracting maximum gain. Once you get past about 7 on the Gain dial, the tone starts to compress and get mushy.
Keeping the Ultra Gain under 6 and boosting with an OD out front gets the amp singing far better than cranking the Gain alone.
I do live on the Ultra RED, and take the gain up to the ragged edge of compression and then boost even further with an OD to get fantastic metal tones.
The Ultra GREEN also benefits from this approach.
Plus, an OD effectively turns the 40CR from a 4-tone amp to an 8-tone amp.

The series loop is excellent for 4CM setups and I use mine with a Boss GT-100 in 5CM (to stereo-slave a VS65R) and MIDI switching.

Love my 40. Does everything at every volume and does it all very well. Can't go wrong for the money.

Thanks everyone for your help! I'm gonna try to find DSL40CR and 2525H in my local stores and play them through. Will go back to the thread if I buy something and share my opinion

Get yourself 2x12 cab with greenbacks to plug your amp into and you'll be good to go. :yesway:
