Hi all, long time lurker first time poster. I recently sold my tsl100 head and 412 half stack as I’m a bedroom guitarist whose wife felt I needed an amp that takes up less space. I have a gt1000 to run fx in 4 cable method and of course used an attenuator for the 100w amp so happy to do so again.

I’m a drummer but enjoy learning/playing guitar. Bands I enjoy playing songs from are:

Chili Peppers
Guns n Roses
Foo Fighters
Metallica
Green Day
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Etc. to give an idea.

Ideally would like some flexibility with tone but obviously still playing in the bedroom and maybe occasionally with a band in garage setting.

My thoughts/options are as follows.
Mini Silver jubilee (head or combo)
Dsl40 combo (not 20 as if I’m sharing controls I’d rather the jubilee)
Studio Jcm800 (head or combo)
Jvm 2 or 4 channel combo

Outside Marshall, given the gt1000 and bedroom playing I thought another option might be Hughes and left we tubemeister or grandmeister deluxe 40’s to give some sound options.

As I live in Tasmania Australia there aren’t options to play these in person so YouTube has been my only option for hearing them. I’d love the thoughts of anyone who has experience with any of the above options whether I could dial in tones close enough to cover most of the bands above or if any would be completely wrong just to help me narrow down my options.

I love Marshall’s but at this point I’m looking for flexibility and no bigger in size than a studio series head on a 212 cab.

Obviously the gt1000 gives lots of flexibility but I don’t want to run that through a speaker I really want an authentic tube sounding amp and in person the gt1000 doesn’t get there on its own but does allow lots of options to tweak the tones of whatever amp I decide on.

Thanks for your advice/wisdom/help

I play a Gibson standard 2005 faded cherry with Alnico 2 Seymour Duncan’s (slash version, only because I liked how they sounded after trying a few different options).

Hi, First time poster as well here, I'll go against the grain of your suggestions and say a JCM 900 1x12
combo - depending on where your preferances are at, either the 5881 or EL34. Just my personal preferance in amps - don't really gel with post Marshall Vintage Modern amps. Gumtree or a second hand store may have the 1x12 JCMs. YMMV disclaimer

I recommend not getting in a hurry - play all of the amps - Marshall or not - at the volume you'll be playing to understand which one suits your needs.

If noise control is an issue closed back cabs are a bit easier to deal with. I was lucky and found a Marshall freak who had a pile of them and the freedom to play them at volume. I live in townhouses for the last 15 years and favor non master volume Marshals and deal with the challenge of keeping them under control. Why? Because I did the tiny, low wattage, mid wattage and modeler route on my way back to 50 & 100 watt amps as I prefer how they sound at any volume. Tiny / low watt amps sound... tiny.

Totally understand having used a 100w Marshall with a 412 using an attenuator got me great sounds. I have a gt1000 and 50w Marshall code and looked at quite a few modelers they just didn’t have the sound.

Unfortunately as I stated originally i have zero opportunity to play most of the amps listed above given my location and lack of local stock/shops.

My first goal is to reduce the footprint from a 412 to something smaller like a vertical 212 or a combo 112.

Second goal, based on the first goal find an amp within that size restriction that will get me enough versatility to play music from the bands I enjoy in conjunction with my gt1000 in 4 cable method.

Based on the above I kind of narrowed down to sone amps I thought might get me close so was hoping people with experience on those amps might be able to offer some advice on which direction would work best.

Money isn’t the issue at all here I can afford any of the above or higher priced amps if someone thinks something off the list is worth exploring.

In all honesty, the GT1000 and the "right" powered FRFR speaker should be all you need to get a very convincing tube amp tone. Pro players use the GT1000 direct, so it should be more than enough for bedroom playing. That said, if you want it to sound like a guitar amp, you'd need to run it through guitar speakers, not FRFR. The 2 approaches yield different results. My 2 cents

Thanks, it’s interesting with the gt1000 it sounds great in a band mix when everyone is mic’d anyway however in the bedroom there is such a distinct difference in how it responds and sounds based on the response that I find the difference far more noticeable in a bedroom setting than I ever would in a band so it bothers me lol.

I’ve tried several different frfr speakers. As you suggested, it sounded so much better running 4 cable method through my tsl100 head even when bypassing the amps own sounds and running the gt1000 amp sounds through the cab.

My thought is this worked best so if I’m going to get another amp but downsized I might as well get one as capable as possible. With the 3 channels available on the tsl100 I found a good mix but I have less selection in amps where I live.

Here’s an idea if you’ve allready got an frfr speaker then , Synergy syn-1 plus module of choice into ir loader of choice ( I use a cab m+ ) . Sounds great at any volume is super compact and I can use actually use this set up in the house with the Mrs about . All my proper amps and speakers have to stay in the studio/man cave 🤣

The DSL is the best Marshall you can buy. Anyone who understands rock tone will recommend the DSL.

Vintage Modern: purple amp. Don't be Barney the Dinosaur.
JVM: amp is totally gay, it lacks mids, too many controls.
TSL: piece of sh*t, retarded brother of the DSL.
Class 5: too small.
AFD100: only for players who jack off to Slash.
YJM100: for men with no dick and penis envy.
Super 100 Jimi Hendrix: not unless you can play Little Wing. Jimi would have played the DSL.

DSL: Likes, BJ's, rock out with your c*ck out...

You're welcome :yesway:

Perhaps I need to revisit the dsl , I’ve not tried one since the 100 watt jump 2000 I had a few years ago . That thing sucked , just couldn’t get a good hard rock sound out of the damn thing ( perhaps it was a dud ) . The current dsl range is probably all right , I just don’t think it will ‘ better ‘ my current Friedman and Synergy set up tbh .

The current DSL's are modern voiced (to me at least) swiss army knife amps. They do a lot of things, but most of them only to a certain degree. I hardly use the Ultra channel(s) but the Classic is great for anything from cleans to a simple pedal platform. At the price tag, they're a solid amp. I'd wager that a DSL is perhaps a little more versatile than your Friedman, but not necessarily 'better' at what you're aiming for. No harm in trying one some day... :)
