I played one live for many years, but alas, the DSL sounded more organic, so I put a footswitch system between the clean/crunch
    and never looked back.

The TSL improves greatly from Mercury OT and choke. HUGE improvement in clarity and tone.
PT also helps. Expensive, but it works. Go with others (Heyboer, Classictone, etc) that are cheaper, if you want.
The factory trannies in these suck, for the most part.
I removed the bright caps on the gain pots for all three channels.

Preamp tubes need to be played around with as well.
I would rather play a stock DSL100, than a modded to the hilt TSL. Just me.
The TSL has a nice clean channel, and a decent lead channel.
The crunch channel sounds off to me...a bit thin and compressed, if you will, compared to the full throated roar of the crunch on a DSL.

    My two cents

I would check the circuit board and power supplies.
I wouldn't do any transformer upgrades to an amp with such poor reliability. That's like waxing a garbage truck.

You say adding a choke will improve clarity and then you remove bright cap?

I had 3 TSL's in the past. Still have 2. But only 1 sounds great, the others mediocre. They have the same tubes in them and still the first one I bought is the best one. I prefer it over the JVM I had. But if I didn't buy that first one I probably wouldn't have bought another. That first one is the oldest but also the least reliable.
Pic is upload with phone, had to compress it.

I found a good one on the used market, sent it to Voodoo Amps for the TSL metal mod, and then added Classic Tone power and output trannies. Clean is Fenderish, mid scoops are now boosts. Crunch channel is 800ish, lead channel is like the Engl fireball I owned. It could use a cap job now.

Yes. It allows you to turn down the gains, without the fizz and thinness.

The choke seems to add more to the feel, than anything, in a good way.

My TSL is the best sounding amp I've ever used. Besides the footswitch sucking, it's been perfect.

I run a Mullard in V1 and a matched set of EHX 12ax7's and it's amazing!

Good points. I had three of them, and had to replace all the bias resistors with metal films, if I remember correctly.
I wouldn't buy an early one, although mine sounded decent form 1998, the first year.

If you have to have one, get one from 2004 or 2005. Correct me if I have the years wrong.
They had about 8 board changes, I think, LOL.

Other than the bias issues, which mine doesn't have, I personally wouldnt do anythjng to the TSL. I put some NOS tubes in. I like mine better than the DSL, I found the DSL more fizzy to be honest. I like that the crunch channel has far more gain than a 800, I like the gain control on the clean channel, it's easy to set amd get great tones from of you like medium heavy stuff as an example.
Play it man. Love mine, great amp!

Whenever folks start dismissing this great (stock) amp, my B.S. meter hits full scale...….again.

    Rock n' roll

This is my old TSL where my tech did a mod to (I think it is a choke?), but I didn't like it so I had him disconnect it.

I am happy that the TSL is not popular, keeps the second hand prices very low. Bought my third TSL 100 for 250 Euro. So yes, these TSL amps suck!!:)

I ain't gonna sue him, he did it for free. He added this while I was there and asked to try it for a couple of weeks. I didn't like it but said to leave it on the amp, just disconnect it...in case I change my mind.

I bought mine new in 2004 its on its 3rd set of power tubes and gets hammered through an attenuator often. It is my most used amp. It gets turned on nearly every day with almost no warm up and lots of times it is turned on and off multiple times a night as I have other things to do which interrupt its use. It has never let me down, there are rock solid reliable ones out there. I put mercury Power and Output transformers and Mercury Choke on it somewhere around 2011 (They are just starting to get a bit of "tone rust" on them) This is one amp which benefits from a tranny upgrade. I imagine the TSL would be the same.

This is the DSL 100 in the left speaker and a JCM 800 2204 in the right. Stereo mic in the middle of the room, Stereo delay pedal. DSL through quad of vintage 30 and 800 through a quad of G12T75.

So yours isnt a TSL? They do sound different from the DSL for sure and I don't know what a tranny upgrade would do but they are different critters . Because of the 3rd channel and no mode switch they sound quite different in some ways.

I have the tsl122 and tsl 100 head with cab. Knowing the past bias issues I replaced both boards with the latest version and re-tubed. Never had another problem with bias drift and the y sound great to me. I rock the hell out of these amps. I especially play the 122 alot. The emulation is pretty spot on too so I run it into my interface.

Yes mine is a DSL, but the transformers are the same. So an upgrade to the small transformers should have the same effect.
