This Youtube came across my screen yesterday. This guy (amp builder in Australia) is getting incredible tones from an Origin and has published is instructions. Anyone else doing this to an Origin? The tone he's getting from the amp has me intrigued enough to buy the next one in my area that I can get for a good price. Resale value & speed of sale on Origin's doesn't seem to be anything like a DSL from what I can tell.
He actually has a lot of info on the origin mods thread here on the Marshall Forum. I like the origins as they come but they are cheap enough I can see why people would use them as mod platforms.
I guess I'm late to the party. I'll have to check out that thread. My only experience with the Origin was trip to a store pre-pestilence and they had DSLs, SV, SC and Origin heads too. The Origin got dusted (IMO) by the other amps in my hands. I think I'd have needed more time, and volume to dial it in. FWIW the SV was the clear winner for me that day.
I use it as a mid to low gain amp. Works fine for that and with pedals gets close to my 2204 without damaging my hearing and so far has worked great for the small gigs Ive done with it. Have yet to need to put it on 20watts unless the drummer gets real rambunctious. One thing Ive found is the built in boost sucks IMO. Better off using a OD or EQ to push the front end. They are pretty sensitive to pickup types and outputs too. If I was going to put the knife to an amp Id much rather do one of these than an SC or SV$$ lol.
Pretty sick indeed. But the mod to turn an Origin 20 into a fire breathing monster, like he demonstrates in that clip...does NOT look like a noob project. There's quite a number of components to swap, anyone who's not experienced enough could easily ruin the pcb tracings, or worse. It's mainly about resistor/cap values...I'm sure the Marshall r&d engineers had their reasons to design the Origin amps the way they did, but imo it would've been damn nice if they went with this australian guy's hot rodded version.
I like my origin exactly as is and don't ever plan on modding it. The way it sounds now is Exactly why I got the Origin in the 1st place. But maybe if I bought a 2nd one for cheap I would do it since modding it wouldn't be an issue for me. Don't get me wrong It does sound good but I'm sure glad they didn't come that way. I searched long enough for my perfect amp. Between on it's own or paired with TS9 and/or a Rat, I can get every single tone I ever wanted out of it as is.
My main reservation to this mod is it has no off switch. It's an always on OD. I'd like to see if the mod can be a complete bypass circuit wired in place of the boost. Duplicate the entire mod circuit with a start to end. Now that would be a true 2 channel beast. Right now I'm getting awesomeness out of my Origin 20H with an SD-1 up front and GE-7/CH-1/RV-6 in the loop.
The more I look into it, the less I like the idea of limiting the amp to just the mod tone once you're done. Definitely sounds awesome, but it's seeming more and more like a hack job for a cool video. The guy sells all kinds of amps and home-build/mod kits, but snubbed the idea of a kit for this (I emailed him to inquire).
Yeah, losing any ability to run clean plus sacrificing the FX loop does stink. He says adding a solid state loop is no big deal... but that's not the case for me. I'd have no idea how to do that.
It’s a go to mod with a board. https://img1.wsimg.com/isteam/ip/52...,l:0%,w:100%,h:88.89%/rs=w:1080,h:720,cg:true
but... the Ori20 is a $400 amp. People spend that much, or more on an exotic overdrive booster. Buy a 2nd amp & mod 1...
it'd probably cost you a couple hundred to have a tech mod it like that, so add $200 +/- to the $400...
from his (the modder's) website... https://headfirstamplification.com do note, that the price $10 is for the PCB board only...
Like I said, this guy makes this stuff. So why the hack mod and video? He only posted the parts list & directions on his website after I emailed and said I didn't want to start/stop his vid 1,000 times to figure out what to buy, and how to do it. I think he'd get some sales if it were a switchable circuit mod with a couple connections, and not a trash the stock amp mod.
Honestly with the mod it just sounds like a DSL now, so what's the point? I can get that exact same sound with my brother's DSL100HR.
