I find the Plexi has more of a bubbly / fuzz type of Overdrive. The JCM 800 is very bright I find (even with treble and presence on 0) but can be tamed with a bright cap clip or attenuator which will round out the sound. Personally I prefer the Plexi as you can can use the second volume knob as a body control when jumpered!

All the guy said was "pass".
I can't think of a more pass-ive thing to say.

in the mid-70s I bought new a 30W solid state 2x12 combo that even Marshall couldn't ID. they sent me some pics of what they thought it might be but they didn't match. it must have been a model not made for too many years as I've never seen another and I foolishly (it was a great amp) sold it in '82. if I knew the model number it wouldn't be an issue but I don't so can you help?

Both are superb examples of Marshall Amplification prowess, either one is an excellent choice.

Just as the 800 can be tamed with a turn of a guitars volume, the Plexi can become quite the monster when that same volume is cranked!

Yes the Jcm800 is a heavier, more overdriven tone because it has a master volume. The Plexi derives all its overdriven tones from the power amp, because it does not have a master volume.

Not sure I know what you mean by your last sentence,....”when you crank a Jcm800, do you get overdriven sound or distortion sound”?

When I crank my Jcm800 Studio the overdrive tones are very gradual, as you turn up the volume knobs. At full tilt the amp is overdriven and distorted but it is not a high gain, modern sounding amp like a Dsl or a Jvm.

You say you’re saving up for a Origin20, I think that's great, is this your first Marshall or first tube amp? There are some good deals out there for the Origin line now, new and used. Are you interested in the n mhead or the combo?

Oh and :welcome: to The Marshall Forum!

Not to derail this wonderful thread, but, the JCM800 was designed to get distortion at lower volume levels than a plexi. It can go from warm and gentle to screaming in your face. You can get warm, smooth distortion at television level if you want, start here; bass at 10, mids and treble at 0, Pre Amp at 10. Put the Master at 1/4 to 1/2. I usually have my gain at 5 or 6. If you need more treble, use the mids knob. You will find this setting good for playing at home but you will need more mids and treble if you want to cut through in a band setting.

No offense if anyone likes johans videos but he lost me when he claimed a peavey 1/12 bandit or some or other thing sounds like a plexi. Wtf ? He kind of makes everything sound the same also. There is some valuable stuff as well but stop with the ( insert any amp here) sounds just like a plexi.

The trick with JCM800 amps is that the mids are really very bright. No need to clip any caps, turn treble and mids down to 2, the amp gets very dark. Use your mids as the treble control, I’m almost never above 3 on either of these knobs.
