I also kinda like it, but I think I hate it more.

It doesn't really have a place in my stable. The distortion mostly sucks. It can sound punchy when clean. I've tried other speakers yada yada.

It's got a line out on the front, that's handy...

What is this POS good for?

They are OK SS amps IMO I had the same one you have not allot of lowend but decent bluesy classic rock amp. Its not a tube amp.....but for what it is I think they are usable....the older non-DI version is better(bluesy tone)tho.

Mod it, add a Cliff speaker jack, plug it into a 4x12 full of Greenbacks, and you'll definitely want to keep it then.

Or sell it...they bring decent money. Yours clearly needs a pot and knob.

Maybe thats the problem right there....If the resistance band is cracked you might not be getting enough single to the next stage in the amp.

that pic is from right after I got it...I replaced that broken pot and also added a speaker jack so I could try with other speakers/cabs.

I had the Lead 20 a few years ago but I sold it feeling basically the same as you. The distortion is really brash though loud it could really roar.

I have the full stack. 10 years ago I had the head gutted and had a 5w tube amp installed. The architecture is based on the Fender Blackface Champ.

Don't know if yours has a problem or not. But the Lead Series works for a lot of people me included!

If it didn’t say Marshall on it would you even look at it?
I don’t consider any of that cheap stuff Marshall, Fender, or anyone else makes anything different than you would get from Walmart, or any other junk store.

The age of youtube has proven without a doubt that much of "cheap junk" is actually quite useable... once you dump the stock speaker.

There were a few guys that plugged Fender/Squier 15R's into decent 4x12 cabs. Even those things roared.

Too funny. When I brought mine home my wife said, 'that looks really cool'. They do look good.

The only reason I was attracted to get mine was because of the praise it was getting online, those videos where Johan? makes them really crunch, and that my price was $50

There was an era in the 80's when Marshall was getting closer to making a SS amp sound better. The Lead 12 in brown is reported to sound better than the black version and for reasons I can't personally attest to. I do know for a fact that the Lead 100 MOSFET (same era) has some usable tones on the pre-amp side and usable cleans for modulation effects, etc.

The reason I drag these other amps into this thread is because they all seem to have a relationship. The brown VS the black version is a different topic for a another day.

In no way am I comparing these to tube/valve amps, but they do have their charm.

I also have 5210 combo (black) that I mainly used for a vocal monitor until it was replaced with some good JBL monitors. It's in need of a recap, but it's in the back of the line on gear than needs attention. The speaker, which has a red frame and a vented cone, does have an interesting voice to it. I will keep it just for the speaker and use it as an open back 1X12 where needed.

Your Lead 12 is good to keep around for what I call TV practice. Put the TV on mute and play boring scales or whatever. It makes TV almost tolerable.

    I said "almost". :D

While not an ideal sounding amp, one can do this with it, at least parts of it. Or, maybe more accurately, Billy Gibbons can do this with one.

Your 5210 is super clean, looks great. I bought a nasty, and cheap, 5210 last night. It's in need of some cleanup, intended purpose is to be run clean and use my my pedalboard and leave at my drummers house. I only had a few minutes with it last night but the distortion mode is similar to the Lead12, as expected, and I don't care for it much. If it has good tone with my pedals and can keep up volume wise I may consider replacing the grill cloth, otherwise I'll unload it before I develop a love/hate like I have with the Lead 12.

My tv amp is actual a Park G25 which has a smooth distortion at low volume and so far I prefer it to the Lead 12 for that.
