A poor mans option (I'm on that list) to that tone is a nice pedal...there are some great pedals that have the same feel and vibe as a dumble amp, at least close enough to scratch that itch.

If I bought the head would I need the matching 1x12 cab or could I use my SV cab or would it sound crap?

IMO, no, you do not need a matching cab. If the head sounds good it should work through any number of cabs quite well. Perhaps there is a "best" setup to use but I don't think the difference would be night and day.
The Dr. Z I bought runs through a Mesa cab; cork sniffers would balk at such a thing but it sounds just fine.
