    Is there or what is the formula for figuring out how many watts an amp is putting out based on voltages? better yet is there a program/web site that will compute it for you if you put in the voltages?

    Thanks,
    Danny

    Yes, the program is called WilderAmplification.stud and you can find it here on the forum somewhere....in fact, it will probably find this thread sooner or later.... :D

    Seriously, he probably knows.

    That's why I come here and ask questions. There seems to be much knowledge here and I have much to learn.

    Hey Danny,

    The basic formula for this is, "Power-in equals power out" Now if you want to know based on a specific Tube then Wilder is your man, I'm too lazy.

    That's why I suggested the WilderAmp.stud program. The MN1967.lame program is virus ridden. And a nancy boy. :naughty: :lol: :wave: :hmm: :lol: :)

    Fuckin' threadjackers n' shit. :D

    In order to calculate your power output, you'll need a scope, signal generator and a resistive dummy load. You can make one out of four 16 ohm 50 watt power resistors wired in series/parallel for a 16 ohm 200 watt load. These resistors must be mounted to some sort of a heat sink to be able to run at their rating.

    Using the scope, you would inject a 1kHz signal and turn the volume up while watching the scope. Turn the volume up until the signal is just at the onset of clipping (i.e. starting to flatten out on the top/bottom of the sine wave).

    Then you'd use a multimeter to measure the AC voltage across the load. Once you have that, you can calculate your clean power one of two ways -

    Method 1

    Power = (Voltage Squared) / Load in Ohms

    Example, you measure 40VAC across the load. Multiply 40 by itself

    40 x 40 = 1600

    Then divide 1600 by the load value -

    1600 / 16 = 100 watts

    Method 2

    Current = Voltage / Load

    Example...you measure 40VAC across the load. Divide that voltage by the load value to get the current.

    40VAC / 16 ohms = 2.5 Amps

    Now multiply the voltage by the current to get the power.

    Power = Voltage x Current

    40VAC x 2.5 Amps = 100 Watts

    The formula derived from Ohm's Law for Power is:

    Watts = Volts^2(squared) divided by Ohm's

    Watts = Amps^2(squared) multiplied by Ohm's

    Watts = Volts multiplied by Amps

    Wow! Ok, I don't have a scope so I guess that's out.

    I have a small combo amp that runs on either one 6L6 - I have a JJ
    or it can run with one 6V6GC - I have a Tunsol

    In my other amp I'm using two TAD 6L6wgc-str tubes

    What is a "Nancy boy?" Is that like a mamma's boy?

    A Nancy Boy? Well...:hmm:...to be polite, it's a young, feminine guy who wears his underwear on backwards. He is also known to take long community showers where he is constantly going for the loose bar of soap on the floor.

    Am I painting the picture good enough?
