Hi guys ,...anyone here has some trannys that were never used
for X reasons that you could sell for a JTM50 build ?...could pronbably go for a JTM45 also.

Know it's a long shot but better ask !

    Thanks

By far your best chance for finding a Merren transformer is to buy a new one. People don't buy them and NOT use them!

Thanks ,............I was trying here because I'd like to build a JTM50 with the 784-128
and Neikeel mentioned that only Brian Wallace makes this one but the lead time can be more than
12 weeks before you get it because of covid.

So maybe I should check with Chris Merren to see if he has some in stock but I'd need to go for
    a JTM45 Output 784-103

I ordered up an OT for a '69 Superlead rebuild. I thing the price is fair and the wait time was actually less than I expected.

Chris has not updated his site for Marshall OTs since 2011 (you will have to ask him but I don't think he does the RS OT for early JTM45s any more).

I have used a couple of his OTs (1202-84 IN A JTM45/100 and a Drake 784-139 in a JMP50) and they are indistinguishable from originals. I've also used Marstrans in many amps, largely because I've found getting hold of Brian easier and the product, as far as I can tell, is of the same high quality. He also rewound a C1998 for my 68SL and did teardowns of 784-74 My best clone (JH spec 45/100) runs his iron and I could not be happier. Only Brian does the JTM era 784-128. Now the tonal differences between a -128 and -139 is almost certainly minimal.
I suggest you buy new and get quotes. The Marstran PTs and choke are slightly cheaper and look more like the originals. I'm pretty sure that both do hi and low voltage options for their PTs.

Thank you Neil for the input , great info as usual!

On Marstran site , it says leed time could be up to 12 weeks and more !....yikes !

Emailed Chris to ask what he has in stock so waiting for his answer.

Have you ever tried the 784-139 with a rectifier!?

I like your suggestion of the half power option , this works with a switch installed for half power or something different?

    Tx

Yes ,....................I thought about this but was
afraid I wouldn't get the same 3D-ish tone that I previously had with Marstran
    but maybe I'm wrong .

I have a full chassis of a Carlsbro TR60 from late 60s, with

Drake OT 784-213, Drake laydown PT 1202-216, 292-426 choke.

Theres a thread on the Metropolos Forum talking about the Marstran vs the Metro, and the consensus is Both are great transformers. Brian Wallace says as much in the thread.

Maybe things have changed but I thought both metro and marstran transformers were made by heyboer.

Yes made by Heyboer with Brian and George's specs ,...I guess there reverse engineered

Sure thing. Its one of my future projects to turn this into JTM50 goodness, but there are at least three other things with priority. As far as I understood they are basically the same but with different parts number stamp

The Carlsbro used OT 784-213 had a different primary impedance compared to the classic "Marshall" -139 from memory.
Could still sound good but may not be exactly the same (never did the A/B test in the same amp myself so can't comment on that).

"Could sound good". Lol if you believe this would make a significant difference between a good sounding and bad sounding OT, it's probably just in between your ears.

They used the same components as Marshall and Sound City/Hiwatt back then, just very bad cosmetic design and branding

Little update ,.......I emailed Chris Merren 3 days ago with no answer yet
and emailed Metropoulos 2 days ago still with no answer ,.......Classic Tone is out of business and Marstran
has 12 weeks of waiting and maybe more ,...the question Ive sent to Merren and Metro was if they had
a PT-OT and choke in stock because with Covid ,I don't want to pay in advance in case something goes wrong and never get what I asked for.

I've got a choke and PT on back order from Marstran at the moment. The recent 784-74 clones were pretty speedy.
