Sometimes I think it would be cool if my V8 sounded like a cool V8.

But it's just a Landrover. Nobody thinks it's cool.

I could achieve the cool sound by destroying the exhaust system.

    ___

Meanwhile, I don't really understand the question.

I have heard 'souped-up "muscle cars"'
But I wouldn't say they "in reality sound like glorified riding mowers".

    ___

    Meanwhile meanwhile....

Imagine having a powerful sound system in your car.
    That's silly.

A sound system belongs in your rehearsal room or on stage.

Ridiculous fake crap IMO!! If you want it to sound mean then it should be mean. A 4 cylinder rice burner sounding like its a badass V8 or badass sports car, really!? Just so stupid IMO!

I thought this thread was going to be about attaching a playing card to your bike with a clothespin.
I agree the fake engine noise is about the equivalent of dummy cabs on stage, but less cool.

ACTUALLY... the old 4 cylinder turbo- and supercharged ricers get exhaust sounds from the exhausts.

It's many of the modern 6's and 8's that often use speakers. Iirc some known offenders are certain BMWs and Fords, although there's probably many others.

Imo Fake engine noise is silly. I like the real rumble of the V8 in my old Corvette. It's under 400hp but still sounds tough.

Some of them 4 cylinder, so called "rice burners" are over 800hp..that's nuts. Google the Subaru Gymkhana. Insane. It doesn't need fake toughness.

Then you know what you must do.

Audi even does it on the exterior to make the exhaust sound mean.

I have opinions on this but they're kind of harsh. I also deride quote-unquote "performance" cars with stuff like heated and cooled seats, big infotainment systems, etc. If you want a performance car, then buy a performance car. If you want a luxury car, then buy a luxury car. But I think it kind of goes back to guys who bought Benzes back in the 80's and 90's were upset that a 20 year old kid in a clapped out Camaro would pull bus lengths on them at stoplights.

The first thing I did to my GTI was disconnect the Soundaktor. The turbo and intake at 28 psi sounds good enough on it's own.

Well you said a mouth full, 4 cylinder turbos and supercharged engines...these are higher performance engines and will typically sound better than some lame ass engine hence no need for fake noise albeit they still sound like shitty little chainsaw rice burners. BMWs and some Fords might do this but its a replica sound of the real engine and they do it only because they have sound proofed the car so well that you cant hear the engine hardly at all but the sound is true not adding a great engine tone to a wimp ass 4 or 6 cylinder or a rice burner (and this is usually only on the higher end more expensive vehicles). If any car is sound proofed so well that with the windows up you cant hear the true sound then adding a bit through the speakers is OK I guess but Id rather have less sound proofing and/or just roll the windows down. This is my point.

There was a story I read out of China last year about a girl who was a popular "influencer" on Chinese social media. She'd present herself as very well off, fashionable, popular, etc. Well, she fell behind a bit on rent, and the landlord decided to get back at her by exposing how she REALLY lives ... long story short, her apartment was an absolutely filthy mess. Like absolutely disgusting. The girl was a pig, and nowhere near the person she was pretending to be.

I don't think these fake engine/exhaust noises are any different. It's like social media for vehicles. A fake reality.

The ones where the muffler hanging out the back is worth more than the car, is about 2" from hitting the road, looks dumb as hell and sounds like total sh-t...yeah those one??

Those are the posers. There are some legit 4 cylinder 800 hp+ Subarus out there. A 4 cylinder isn't just an 60 hp Ford Pinto anymore ya old bastards.:applause:...lol.

A lot of States have noise limits. So car manufacturers can't install low restriction exhaust systems. A Mustang GT can't be any louder than a Hyundai.

And a lot of cities and towns have noise ordinances and cops with dB meters that will write you tickets if you install aftermarket loud pipes.

But when you pay a lot extra for performance, many people don't want their car to sound like a sewing machine. So the manufacturers added external speakers that make controllable race car sounds. Turn them down at inspection time, or if a cop pulls you over, or if you don't want to bother your neighbors when you come home at 2AM.

Modern American V8's have crazy horsepower even with quiet pipes. But you know how spaceships in movies always make whooshing sounds even though they're in the total silence of a vacuum? Sound is part of the experience of speed. 6 seconds to 60 feels faster when you hear a roar instead of a whirr.

Lots of cars have useless spoilers that make them "look faster". A speaker that makes them "sound faster" isn't any sillier.
