How can i get the evh brown sound with my marshall dsl 40cr
to the forum.
Hellava first post.
No quick-n-easy answer to that question.
A big part of Eddie's tone was more than just equipment.
Your going to need some pedals.
I'd suggest trying a few different drive pedals out front, and definitely an EQ in the loop.
New guy here, but I've been playing and chasing brown sound for many years. I'm closer than ever, oddly enough, with a dsl 40cr. Even more so than my 69 plexi. That being said, hope I can help out the OP.
I'm running a tc electronics spark mini into an evh phase 90 straight into the amp on the green ultra channel with the gain just over half and channel volume cranked. Treble at 6, middle just under 2, bass 5, presence and resonance just over 2. Reverb 10. Master is good anywhere over 5 on the 20 watt setting. Tone shift in. I'm running a 1950s telefunken in valve 1, which made a huge difference, sovtek in valve 2, rest are stock. Running into an evh 2×12 cab. A set of super D or evh pickups wouldn't hurt either.
Thanks, i was thinking the boss sd-1 and a phase 90 to start out with but another thing i was wondering is what eq settings to use on the amp aswell
Impressed by the Lurker !!!
Welcome to the MAF too !!
SD-1 in front of a Marshall is a great place to start.
I get all kinds of different stuff from the GE-7 in the loop on my Origin20.
Best advice I have is try what works for you.
There's no magic recipe.
And other new guy, too.
Thank you! I’m new to this forum plus guitar in general, i’m 16 and i grew up with my dad playing and listening to VH and i loved it i’ll try this out and let you know how it goes!
Give it a shot! Should get you in the ballpark.
Hey, thanks for the welcome guys! Almost always more a lurker than contributor, but I'm a big Eddie fan and love dsl's. Can get almost anything out of them with the right overdrive and speakers.
@Jathan Seay welcome to the forum son, great how a 16yo in this day and age shares the guitar passion with his dad, good on you
You've got a very nice amp, enjoy the music journey and keep playing for as long as you like. I don't know what to suggest for that EVH tone, but other members have already chipped in, OD pedal in front of the amp and an EQ in the loop are a good start.
Forget to mention to the OP, I'm running the spark at about 20%. Keep the OD low. Just enough to goose it a little.
Nope. That's why I lurk.
Maybe a crappy phone video tomorrow.
to ya both.
Also don't forget that recordings sound different from live. You can get close but EVH live sounds different from studio for a reason. Guitar pickups also affect the tones you get.
Play and get a tone you really like even if it is similar to but different from EVH.

How’s that phone video coming along?
