    Hey all,

Just grabbed a DSL40CR and am absolutely loving it - it pairs REALLY well with my PRS Vela. The only thing is that it's BRIGHT. If I turn Treble and Presence WAY down, it sounds great - so I may just keep the V-Type. That said, wondering who has swapped out speakers, and to what speaker. I've been thinking about a WGS Invader 50, but am very open to ideas. Thanks!

I was perfectly happy with the V-Type, but swapped it out anyway.
To drop some weight I put in a (now discontinued) G12 Century Vintage neodymium speaker.
    Not dissimilar to the V-Type: i.e. mid-tamed V30.
    But 3.5 lbs lighter.

I love it, and it pairs well with the V-Type in a 112 cab under the 40CR.

So, not sure if any of that is helpful.

And welcome to the MF @Aahzz.

I ain't no speaker connoisseur, and I don't have the 40CR, but I've been able to get some very different tones from my amps with some tube changes.
If you still have the stock speaker, do you still have the stock tubes?
I've also noticed that my different guitars & pickups change the sound of my amps way more than the different speakers I've tried.
What kind of guitar(s) do you have, and what are the pickups?

If your amp is new you might like the V-type once it's broken in. Most of my speakers were bright and buzzy for the first month or so. I learned to be patient with them before pulling the trigger on a new speaker.

    Congrats and welcome.
In the old DSL 40 some of us swapped to a Texas Heat. I have a couple of those , a 65w cream back , couple G12 - T75’s , maybe a Ragin cajun and just got a WGS green beret.

I believe the tubes are stock - I got a screaming deal on a used one off Craigslist, which the seller said was 1 year old and barely played. As such, I'm not yet positive if the speaker is broken in yet or not - it is the stock V-Type.

I only have 2 guitars, both of which are PRS Velas - 1 solid body, 1 semi-hollow. So it's a PRS Starla pickup in the bridge, Type D single coil in the neck. They do tend towards the brighter end of the spectrum themselves.

I love the tone of the amp, it's just a touch ice picky in the higher end, though it's more noticeable playing by myself than it is with the band. I'm not going to make any snap decisions, just looking to see what anyone else has had luck with should I decide to change :).

I would maybe try some different tubes if you any lying around and wait a little bit for the speaker to break in. It's a fantastic speaker once it's got some mileage on it.

I have a WGS Vet 30 in my CR & an ET65 in my original 40C. If the majority of tone is the speaker, I have to say I prefer the ET-65. I have also used an Egnater Elite in my 40C & it sounds great as well.

The brightness on my baby DSL was mostly the bright cap value. I reduced mine from 470pf to 100pf and it tamed it waaaayyyy down. I think its C19 on the DSL40...maybe someone could varify that.
I also swapped out my speaker to a Celestion Heritage G12-65 it pairs well IMO.....but the brightness was more so THAT cap.
And yes pre amp tubes can really taylor the amps tone I like vintage 12ax7s myself......but even grabbing a few differant new production tubes will definetly change the tone...for better or worse is a matter of taste so trying is the only way to see. If so get um from a reputable dealer......there are allot of duds floating around ebay...factory rejects....unbalanced triodes.....low gain....noisy POS passed off as new at a hard to believe price.

I put an Eminence Tonker in mine, tamed the high end considerably.

As said above when the speaker breaks in it will be better. I was quite happy with mine but I put in an alnico that I had lying around. It now sounds like an amp that cost waaaay more money. It's not so much that it's less bright it just seems to have smoothed everything down just a bit.
I've also put GT mullard replica power tubes in there. They seem to end up in all my amps. Just makes it more woody in the mids.

OK, so I lied when I said I wasn't going to rush into anything :). Found a WGS Invader 50 used at a good price on Reverb, so went ahead and snagged it. Figure if I don't like it I can resell it for what I paid, and if I do like it I can sell the V-Type. Further reports and a demo will follow after the speaker arrives.

My favorite in the DSL40 I had was a celestion neo magnet century vintage. No longer made but awesome speakers. I have 2 in a 2x12. Warm with great low end. I’d go 65 watt creamback or the 60 watt neo creamback also for runners up.

    Don't sell the V-Type.
Look for an unloaded 112 cab to stand the 40CR on.
They come alive paired with an extension cab.

Invader speaker is brighter and clearer than the V type.

Put the Invader in today. It's still bright, but not harsh - I think I'm going to love it, true test will be playing with the band, which won't happen til next week for a variety of reasons. I didn't want to lose top end, I just didn't want the ice pick, and this works well for taming it.
