What do you guys like for v1 preamp tube in the Dsl20HR. No issues just some tube rolling. I do have an old 5751 in v2. Was thinking Tung sol or Gold Lion. Currently has a stock JJ

I have a mullard 12ax7 in my V1. It is a bit warmer and fuller than stock. I used to have the Mullard CV4004 in there, that is now in V2 and makes the 2nd channel seem quieter.

    I don’t hear much of a difference between a $50 preamp tube and a $18 one.

Pickup a NOS rft.....great rock bitey v1 tube for marshall. Or a strong used I63 mullard great more classic sounding option.
At $60 the rft is not a ton more than a ri gold lion.
I tried a ri tungsol...lasted about ten minutes be for I pulled it went digging through my nos stash.

I've got a set of Mullard New Production Power tubes in my SC20 now, I almost bought 3 Mullard preamp tubes to have a extra set on hand. Then I came across some new production Tungsol 12AX7s that are getting some great reviews!

NOS Valvo that tests good. Or a Baldwin labeled black plate that tests good.
    Excellent suggestion also.

Johan Segeborne did a good roundup of 17 12AX7 tubes. It's quite useful to give you a general impression of how different brand tubes might sound.

It might help give you an idea of the flavour of sound these produce. With a few exceptions they sound pretty similar.

    Mullard ECC83, 12AX7
    Mullard ECC82, 12AU7
    Mullard ECC81, 12AT7
    Philips ECC83
    TUNG-SOL ECC83
    Audio Classic ECC83
    TAD ECC83
    Mesa Branded ECC83
    Marshall Branded ECC83
    Raytheon ECC83
    Ultron ECC83
    Ruby Tubes ECC83
    Electro Harmonix
    ECC83 Raytheon
    ECC83 JJ ECC83

That's a great shoot out. They were pertty similar, but overall I thought the EH was as good or better than most of the others. The JJ, Mesa, and Marshall sounded the worst IMO.

Tubes sometimes aren't allways a huge audible difference as much as a "feel" difference. Sometimes you'll find licks that are tough to pull off on a certain amp will suddenly be easy and buttery with the right tubes.
And what doesn't work in one circuit may be the ticket in another. He'll I have tubes I hate in V1( ge short plates) that I adore in CF and PI spots in certain amps.
Some tubes have dark warm gain were as others may be brighter with amazing ringing swirling harmonics.
Listening to demos of tubes imo is only a sample...there is no substitute for playing through them and finding what they do in each spot of your amp.

GT mullard reissue. Power and preamp. To my ears they have exactly the sound. And they're not expensive. Note to self - order up some spares....

In that particular amp, I would vote for the Tung Sol hands down as a great V1 tube. High gain and will keep the amp nice and open sounding. In fact, I have found this tube to be a great V1 for most amps.

I will also echo the sentiments of others that the Mullard (so called) reissue 12ax7 and CV4004 are great preamp tubes! I have a 12ax7 in V1 of my JCM 800 and it sounds awesome.

My current drool worthy preamp tube is the vintage UK Mullard 7025, the fortified version of the 12ax7.

The UK Mullard crushed the competition in that video imo.

Looking for something I don't remember what.
A vintage Blackburn Mullard ECC83 in a DSL V1 is very hard to beat.

JJ ecc803s...they’re like the mullard reissue but with more clarity.
