Just found out something very interesting Kurt James who was around the Van Halen early club days that the so called JBL speakers Edward used where not JBL speakers but Radio Shack speakers with silver clones that look liked JBL speakers. Kurt James was recently on you tube Van Halen stories # 22 and talks about that

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure RS just rebranded speakers, so if that's the case, I wonder which ones those were rebranded from? Maybe the JBL rebranded for RS? Either way, it's kind of interesting, as I can totally see him walking into a RS back in the day.

The RS guitar speakers I worked with from approximately 68 to 71 were in fact Utah speakers. Peeling back a RS label revealed a fresh Utah label underneath. RS was a great source for local supplies. Open until 9pm weekdays, resistors, potentiometers, solder.
Sad when they closed.

Ha ha, RadioShack JBLs? Radio Shack (lovingly referred to as Rat Shack), even in their heyday, relabeled the cheapest $h!te they could get their hands on. Without even seeing the speakers they had back then, I can confidently say they were not JBLs.

Now whether EVH used Rat Shack speakers, maybe. That I wouldn’t know.

In the picture or video above for Friedman's plexi, what is the thing that looks like a volume potentiometer? Is that for the bias? It's in the center of the amp inside right by the small light blue components.

Ask John Suhr.
there is something fishy about eds amp : i asked dave friedman about a pic of the guts of the amp he said he never took any. For me that seems so weird that someone wouldn't take any pictures of this legendary amp before even going into working with it.

by the way dave told me that his variaced sounding amp is coming.

Yeah i don't think this is true i have a high resolution picture of david lee roth which is sitting on the cab. The speakers cones are smooth the only radio shack speakers which have a silver dome the same size as the picture is the 40-1314 and this speaker hasn't a smooth cone. this speaker cone has multiple lines. However i believe it isn't a jbl d120f. I believe eddie used altec 417-8H which has a smooth cone like in the picture and the cone dome is taller compared to the jbl d120f which is closer to the picture moreover there are two hints it might have been the case : alex van halen used altec speakers. Randy rhoads which went to see van halen live and tried many times to see how he got his tone used those speakers too. Just listen to those speakers and they will sound van halen like right away.

something bothers me about those speakers : the dome size seems way bigger than the jbl d120f.

Dave Friedman,John Suhr and the rest seen Edwards amp after Peter Van wheelen(89-90)put the amp back to stock values, Jose Arrendondo was Edwards main amp guy from the mid 70s until he’s death. When Steve Vai joined David Lee Roth band David had modded marshall amps that were modded by Jose why do you think ANSWER David knew Edwards Marshall were modded by Jose, another example Steve Lynch from the band Autograph used a Jose modded marshall on the Turn Up The Radio song/(
Listen to that song)album Autograph toured with Van Halen on the 1984 tour the drummer from Autograph was friends with David lee Roth(that’s why they toured with Van Halen)Steve Lynch got that information from David Lee Roth about Edwards marshalls.

although...

I saw Vai on the DLR tour, & he sounded NOTHING like EVH at any period of early VH, up to 1984...

Then there's this:

which makes more sense to me...

Vai's Lee Jackson mod'd JMP:

I know He didn’t sound like Edward but what I was saying David Lee knew Edwards amps were modded by Jose. Jose had a few different mods. Steve Vai gear was different from Edwards but Steve marshall(s) were done my Jose, the pic of the amp listed above(Vai modded marshall) was running on kt88 tubes.

wow you are lucky ! any gut shot ? do you know some cap values for v1 ?
No I don’t have any, haven’t taken it apart but there is a YouTube video about the amp that gives more details. I know if you email Dave Friedman and ask about it he can give you more details.
