I got an CS40L from the Music Locker a few years back. Best combo am sound wise I heard. Old script model from 1963.

Then lately I found another one a few serial numbers away from my first one.

With original "brown pinstripe" cloth found on many fake Marshalls.

The other amp had been "JTM45" redone. There are no known Schematics of the old CS40L with valve rectifier. But I copied it from the first one. Unknown-2.jpeg IMG_1633.JPG

I also made a new baffle keeping the old bracings

Now it soon time for a testdrive...

    Just need valves/tubes!

The amp was stripped of the original Celestion Alnicos. I got a pair of speakers from a forum member they were also destroyed in the mail. (Had some bad experience with deliveries this year) One of the speakers had the magnet dislocated and the cone and coil squeezed and destroyed and had to have the magnet relocated and cone replaced...

I reused the gasket and the dustcap of the old speaker

    HOLY CRAP!

A Master Volume Amp from 1963! I never realized such a thing existed! It's good to learn new things!

Stuart Mercer started building Carlsbro guitar amps in 1959 if I recall and had a master volume to begin with.

The two amps above are amps number 201 and 243 (He used consecutive numbers on his amps, not like Marshall that had serial numbers all over the place.)

I put valves in the number 243 this morning and I seem to have got the wiring pretty right! :) I got sound and all controls are doing what they should. (I was surprised that I seem to got the tonestack right as I copied it from the another amp were I couldn't read or measure all values as well as all the jumpers underneath. If I´d got any jumpers wrong... I wouldn't have be able to correct it with out taking the whole thing of again!)

Will do some more checkup and perhaps install an extra fuse on the HT line just to be sure.

The first one 201 I will then do some wire dressing and clean up as the one cord wires sometimes broke of as I tried to measure the board up. Also it has a few "ugly" replaced components and solders.

    Fantastic work!
Seems your posties kick your parcels up the hill (or is it down the hill?) to your house. That baffle and the speaker must have had hell of a bash to do that.
Did the speaker repair work out? I have been tempted but have only gone as far as gluing loose spiders down which does work well.

ps I have a later 40w Bro' combo, that came with T1217s and reverb, sitting here as I had to reglue the cab top corner, also a PA60, PA100 and PA200 (all sitting in one of the stables). They are all well built. The 100 and 200 are to be Partridge donors for other projects. The combo needs TLC and the PA60 is the least desirable of the lot but by far in the best condition.

Did you ever get time to check out my former old Carlsbro combo and maybe a guess about the manufacturing year?

I have your Carlsbro as well! Great amp but more headroom and great clean sound. Will take a family photo of them all soon! :)

Here is you old Combo kuli

I don’t know model number or serial number (sticker is damaged)

It is very different from the CS40Ls with its valve set up and separate preamp and power amp

Nice!! i think these are extremely rare amps and to see 3 of these in the same picture is even more rare...

Yes my old amp was very different from your 2 others, I have never seen any other like that - do you think it is even older than the CS40Ls?

I think your old one might be the oldest one (too bad the sticker with serial number is lost)

It have the plastic script logo on the baffle, so does my first CS40L but not the second one (I changed the baffle but the old baffle didn't have the support to hold the logo nor any holes in the grill cloth.

Your old amp have the separate pre and power amp which were copied from a Selmer amp (don´t remember which right now).

Having to make two different chassis were also more costly, and the design to have the preamp only mounted to the plexi panel is not very good (you might remember it had cracked in many places.) So it seems to be a more "primitive" design.

However the first Carlsbros were made in 1959 and they didn´t have the Plastic script logos either... I will check cap codes and pot codes.

Carlsbro is a amp I am very interested in but it was another model. Bill Nelson played Carlsbro early on. None the less , your project is amazing .
