I am on a Soundgarden and Metallica kick at the moment and can't seem to dial in the SV for a good Soundgarden, presuming I might struggle when I go for the Metallica one too.....

Any suggestions on amp settings and/or a pedal in front that might work nicely?

I don’t have a SV 20 and have never tried to get their tone or even play any of their stuff (I like it) So looked this up. Kim used 2 Mesa’s
That is the beginning of difficulty.
    Kim Thayil's Amps
Kim combines a Mesa/Boogie Trem-o-Verb combo and a Mesa/Boogie Electradyne head dialed in to complement each other. The Trem-o-Verb is set quiet with a lot of gain and compression for the midrange and drive. The Electradyne is also set with a lot of gain but has more lows and more sparkle on the top end. The amps blend and run through two 4x12 cabinets with Celestion Vintage 30s for a full, complete sound. The Hughes & Kettner Rotosphere is run through the effects loop of the Electradyne, so there's one wet amp and one dry amp with the effect.”

Throw any OD pedal in front and dial it in. Their tone is nothing difficult just nice and heavy. :yesway:

One key part to Kim’s tone is lots low mids which I believe is out of the wheelhouse for the SV20. Mesas excel at this while being able to keep the tone super tight which is probably why he chose an Electra Dyne for that tour.

It’s not ideal but with an SV20 you can do this with the bright channel and the right OD and an EQ in the loop. You can also use the normal channel with a good pedal. The Friedman Dirty Shirley is a good candidate.

Gonna need a dist pedal to get that dirty
Remember all the studio effects added. Trying reviewing live sound clips. Obviously Big dif between live and studio. Id strive for their live sound first

When I think of Soundgarden tone, I think of Badmotorfinger, which was Peavey VTM amps. Their Mesa tones on later albums are really good, but not as distinctive IMO.

How to do it on the SV20? You have to find the right pedal, but I don’t have any suggestions, unfortunately. I would play the pedal into the normal channel, and jumper it to the lower left input to add a little of the high treble into the mix.

    Sweet suggestions thank you!

I received a cheap Marshall Jackhammer by courier yesterday and just spent some time working with that.

Holy hell that pedals EQ is vast. By moving fractions of millimeters on the pedal and nearly as small on the amp controls I got reasonably close. Just tiny turns and it was well out of the window, I'm actually a bit stunned how such small adjustments were required.

The good news was I lost myself and blasted the neighbors for nearly an hour with the SV20 on full 20 watts through the PS1 on full (which I believe is half the actual volume) .

Great fun. Now to focus on Metallica.

I have a DOD Boneshaker pedal coming, hoping that will get close to that sound through the SV :)

Thank you, that just happens to be my default setting and that worked well with the Jackhammer pedal. Cheers.

Superunknown was recorded with blending an early 70s Marshall JMP50 and a Mesa Dual Rectifier

    It wasn't a 800, it was a modded SLP with a rat
