I'm looking for recommendations for a 2 channel (decent clean). I've thought about the JCM900 4500 DR and a JCM2000 DSL 100. I have a JVM 210H but I've just never jived with the JVM series amps.

I've sometimes wondered if the speaker you can only get in a 1912 cab or JVM215C might be the perfect down-tuning speaker.
The Celestion G12B-150 8 ohm has a lower shifted frequency range than the average Celestion.

For instance, the V-Type, Creamback 75, and V30 all have a range of 70-5000Hz, and resonant frequency of 75Hz.

The G12B-150 has a range of 60-4000Hz, and a resonant frequency of 77Hz.

The voice coils are larger too: 2" vs 1.75".

    The problem is sourcing them.

Probably not going float your boat, but Valvestate 8100 is a very common death metal amp... Chuck from Death, among others used this...

I'm not a huge DSL fan, but for that type of music it might work pretty well. They have a darker sound, and good low end thump. An EQ in the loop would help also.

These are great recommendations. I have always been a Marshall loyalist. Honestly one of the best sounding amps I own is an Engl Savage 120 but damnit Marshall is in my DNA. I might pull it on a 900 DR. Trey Azagthoth always used one and had amazing tone.

All great suggestions. Also, from my experiments @SkyMonkey is dead on, the choice or speakers / cab and their placement have a huge influence on the tone, so does EQ-ing the amp, or whether or not to use a boost (and which one), EQ pedal in the loop, pickups, guitar, pretty much everything. Apart from the playing style, of course :)
I own a DSL40CR but sometimes I fancy a JVM or an old JCM800, but then the reality and the budget constraints hit hard and I realize my existing amp, 2x12 cab, speakers and the few OD and EQ pedals I have can get me in the ball park for the tones I like.

A Rat pedal through a 2203 is Death Metal Royalty.

JCM800 2203 for early Bolt Thrower (tuned to A) and Obituary still uses them on Trevor Perez side but he's not really downtuned that much. Death used 8100 Valvestate. On recordings for recent albums, Carcass blended EVH 5150s with 2203s for the recorded tone. Bands like Electric Wizard used 2203s in the past and I think Pike had some 2203s in his wall of amps in Sleep before they came out with the Rockerverb.

What is it you dont like about the JVM? A couple hundred bucks to do some mods might be a cheap and easy way to turn it into the amp of your dreams. :yesway:

Which ones do you recommend? NF mod? Choke mod? I know there are a few out there.

I dont have a JVM but I've read how they can be transformed to another level. Alot of guys have modded JVMs here, post a new thread about modding your JVM and I'm sure those guys will come out of the woodwork with suggestions. How long have you had it and what is it you dont like about your amp?

Amen to that. Always wanted to emulate the tone of early Obituary (esp. this track):

Nile used DSL heads, doesn't get much more downtuned metal than that, last few years they've used Engls, but for like 15 years it was all DSL

If you actually like that stuff....oh well, no accounting for taste! But if you aren't an absolute dyed in the wool brand loyalist, then you should check out a Mesa Badlander.

That's a lot of money to spend just to chug and play power chords, fourths, fifths, and flatted fifths 99 percent of the time.

I'm thinking that drop-tuned knothead metal has just about run its course. I hope so, anyway.
