Looking for something as an always on pedal to boost the gain a little and tighten the bass up for palm muting. Going for an early Metallica type tone, a little thicker/heavier maybe. I’ve been going back and forth between a ts808 and a walrus iron horse(like a rat with more bottom end), both sound cool but cut the bass/thin things out and color the tone a little too much

I always thought a SD1 is one of the best sounding pedals to go with a 2203. When I use to have my 2203, that's what I used and I played thrash metal back then very much in the vein of Metallica and Iron Maiden and that pedal was perfect!

Try tube screamer mini with the tone and gain turned completely down, volume maxed.

I have several OD/boosts at home and my go to pedal to use with my 2203KK is the SD1

Everyone says SD1. I’m going to say a clean boost Bogner LaGrange.

Back in the 80’s I used a ts9 with my 2204 then switched to an sd-1 . Always thought it sounded more aggressive than the ts9 but pretty generic compared to what we have now.

my go to pedal for other amps is a clean boost, like the mooer pure boost, but the SD1 sounds better with the 2203kk

My clean boost pedal (and literally the only pedal I own) is a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster. The sweet spot is around the 10 dB boost setting. Above that, things get noisy and overstuffed.

One of the hands-down best pedals I have ever found is the B.K. Butler Tube Driver. It's a bit pricey but you can get pretty much any kind of distortion/overdrive ya want, and it's got a very natural-sounding tone. It uses a 12AX7 and is AC only, so you have to be able to plug it in.

Rat, TS9, SD1, GE7, not in any particular order, use each one depending on the tone at that moment. :yesway:

1.) BOSS SD-1 ( don't use mine much anymore but that pedal is BEAST mode with the JCMs)

    Currently Using:

2.) MXR 10 Band M108s - Volume and Gain is crazy handy and the sculpting possibilities are endless. Very powerful pedal to own.

I could make an argument for about 2 dozen pedals I have in my closet for this application lol. TS, Klon/klone, sd1, Timmy, ep preamp and Rat are pretty much the broad variations besides the aforementioned trusty ole eq!

I like Klones lately, although it seems as though the ones I like the most are the noisiest lol. But we all know why that is—the more we likey, the louder and more gain we want!

The majik box Doug Aldridge Rocket Fuel is by far the best boost pedal for my 800 and plexi’s I’ve ever come across.
It has a clean boost and an overdrive in the one pedal, they can be used separately or together. Awesome pedal, check it out

Klon circuits are fantastic , after all Bill Finnegan from Klon specifically designed that circuit to out perform the Tube screamer in this situation . The Klon keeps your core original tone intact far better than a TS , or any variant imo . Its a very unique pairing the two make , a cranked up Marshall and a Klone .

SD-1 all day, every day. Tried a bunch of others, always come back to the SD-1.

    SD-1

That pedal was made with the JCM800 in Mind, even the colour matches.

YEP. SD-1 sounds best, I've tried many other pedals. Yet my SD-1 sounds terrible with my Silver Jubilee but amazing with my 2204 & JCM 2000 DSL 50.

NO way, I have both and the SD-1 kills that Tube Screamer.

I still have my 1983 CSA 2203, I was 16 when the JCM800’s emerged. Back then it was DS-1, TS-9, or SD-1, wasn’t a lot to choose from really. We quickly figured out that the SD-1 and the 2204/2203 was a match made in Heaven. The DS-1 was too much and the TS-9 was too mid pushed. So yeah SD-1 all day everyday.

    +1 SD-1

If you are looking for something else, I’ve had great success with the Nobels Natural Overdrive into the crunch mode of the green channel of my DSL. Never tried it into a JCM800, though.
