Got me a solid-ish remote freelance income and been considering a move to a no-income-tax state.

House prices outside Houston are tempting me. Seems the tax diff alone would pay half the mortgage

Is this too good to be true? Anything wrong with the place, other than being on the opposite side of Houston from the port (which doesn't mean anything if you don't commute there)?

Map says they got a Whole Foods, a Sams Club and a Lowe's, google says low crime and median household income over 100k... seems like all the attributes of bourgie living. What am I missing?

Houston is very hot and humid and proned to hurricanes. Dfw is much better if you’re looking for a city place. Many nice suburbs here. Still hot as hell but better. Ft worth is much better and less crowded than the Dallas area.

It's Texas. Some Texans are a bit... off. Not all, mind you, but enough that maybe you'd better read all you can before relocating to the Republic of Texas. There is a Texan mind set with a lot of Texans. The "stand your ground laws" are something you may not know about and should be read. You can get shot for just about anything and the other guy can say he felt threatened for his life and that's why he shot you.

We have Castle Doctrine in Maine. Not as loose as stand your ground but it may be why B&Es are very low here. Also no permit is required anymore to carry concealed, just pack.

I live in the adjacent area. I live in Cypress, TX. If I drive less than 10 miles south, I'm in Katy. I have lots of friends there, and I'm there at least once a week.

Lots of construction going on in Katy. Population is outpacing infrastructure. Traffic is really bad.

I'd go north of there to a new master planned development called Bridgeland. A little more expensive, but it's really nice and getting better.

Or, go to the SW part of Katy, towards Fulshear. That's a nice area that's away from central Katy that is so congested.

Or, come up a little father north to Cypress, not as congested and a very nice suburb.

Or go farther north to the Tomball area. N and NW Tomball are nice. My oldest stepdaughter and her husband live in the East Katy area and they plan to move to Tomball in the next two years.

I'm thinking about planning a trip to Texas this winter. I've been batting around the idea of relocating, and that's one of the states I'm thinking about. I've only been to Texas a couple of times, but I really liked it.

If you are minding your own business and not getting in places you have no business being, the stand your ground law is never going to affect you. It does clearly give you the right to defend yourself without any obligation to retreat, if you are being threatened with violence, and that's a GOOD thing.

A state that has laws that says you have to try to run away from a threat is not a state that I'd ever want to live in.

I've got friends in Katy, seems nice, but all my Houston friends complain about traffic. You're going to get that with most cities in TX. I'm originally from S. Illinois, but enjoy the let-live (or die) mentality here. Taxes are low, low unemployment year over year and the live music is good. Was in Luckenbach last night drinking a Shiner. Not bad at all.

back in 92ish, i had just gotten married. i lived in FL. my new wife and i moved to a small town north of
Cocoa beach. we got a lab puppy as a wedding gift.
well we moved into a duplex. she worked nights and i was usually gone fishing.
my neighbor had complained a few times that my dog was barking to much for his likes.

now, this neighbor had parties out under his car port EVERY night of the week. loud. drunks. music
on 10. the dog would bark because he wold hear them through the block wall that divided our places.
we were leaving one nigh to go to cocoa beach to visit her mom. the guy said if he heard my dog bark he would
kill it. his "wife" just motioned us on as in "dont worry about him' type motion. we left.

we came back and my side door window has been busted and blood was everywhere.
the window had this wire mesh on the inside of it for some reason. im willing to bet the people before us had it installed.

ok blood everywhere. so much so i just knew he had killed my dog. we get inside and the dog was in the back room scared to death. we called the police. the party was in full swing next door as usual. i showed the cop the blood everywhere and told them of the threats before we left. you could see jeff setting there drunk and his hand and arm bandaged up all the way to his elbow. the cop goes over. they drop the strereo volume. the cops asked if they noticed anything that happened. jeff and crew said they didnt know anything had happened. cops come back and said
nobody saw a thing. i asked the cop if he noticed the bandages and told him they werent there before we left.
cop said that wasnt enough proof for him to have asked anything about it. i told the cop that my wife was in fear and
that if the guy came over to start shit after they left i was gonna take to him with my ball bat. i would have. thats just me and not my first time in doing so. the cop said that he was making note of my threat and would see me under the jail if anything should come up.
i asked him what the hell was we suppose to do if he came and broke in. the cop said go out the back door.
i told him i didnt have a back door. call us then he said. i told him it took them 45 minutes to get here this time
that whatever would be done by the time they got there if we needed them. he said "well, you got windows to crawl
out of dont ya". louver windows i told him. (very common in fl by the way) he said "im sure you will come up with something".

From what I remember, not much more than Atlanta, and where I am located here in SoCal

shittin me. we spent time in Corpus Christi back in the mid 70's.
i though i was gonna die bro. i lived in FL for a while, twice.
fl temps are higher than Atl but, they have a solid breeze. Atlanta
is a dead heat. the humidity will kill you here.
last 2 summers havent really been that bad honestly. last two winters
have been some of the warmest on record too in the last 10 plus yrs.
they say that this winter is expected to be warmer again.
i hope that rings true. our problem in the black ice. we dont really get
snow here but we rule the roost for black ice. what should be a 2 car wreck always
ends up 8 cars plus.
we dont have snow trucks here either. the lightest dusting of snow and people freak the hell out
like nothing you have ever see. shelves in stores will be wiped out. people park along the road
sides just to get milk and bread. all this for a light dusting now ok.
the sheer panic gets people killed. if by chance we do get snow to stick it lasts no longer than 24 hrs.
but to the masses the world is coming to a end and they aint got but 10 hrs to live
and all they want to do is eat. this is a awakening for me. shows what will happen if we get
a serious lock down or SHTF situation happening. most people really are big dumb animals.
