I bought this amp sight unseen. Had a buddy call me randomly and said his father in law had an old Marshall tube head from the 70s, so I went for it. He dropped it off to me and I found it to be a 1973 Marshall Major in very good condition. There is a split in the bottom tolex, but could easily be repaired and isn’t visible when you are looking at it. Original Genalex tubes. I replaced the power chord because the original was disintegrated. How many of these were made? I’ve read 1200, but I’m not sure if it’s accurate. It’s so clean and original that I really don’t want to risk hurting it from using it, but it seems to work great, no hum. I’d prefer a super lead, but I’m just trying to figure out as much info as possible about this amp. Should I hold on to it for the collectibility purpose, or sell or trade? Any info on this would be much appreciated! 28DEB104-6D43-4BB7-B384-CAACBD353038.jpeg 14A273DE-CE8D-408D-9D4E-08CCA27251B0.jpeg CAE84D5F-CE50-4086-BB43-01C6D2C92CE2.jpeg B0891463-3255-4903-B129-3F90C9A43747.jpeg 7BC47E0B-400A-4ABA-AC7E-403DAD58BA82.jpeg B9951A90-3BBD-4592-81F8-3423A63982B0.jpeg AA2D7D8A-8662-42C0-B57C-2124EADA312D.jpeg DCA08DB6-274A-4C93-9968-EA5646D43ECA.jpeg

    I have a 72 Major, yours is the cleanest I've seen. It's a keeper!

That is museum quality (not that I think amps should be in a museum).

Personally I would sell it for highest price I could get and buy a clean and tidy half stack (50 or 100w with matching 4x12 pre-rola cab).:2c:

Very nice indeed, certainly looks very clean.

Don't let a tech anywhere near it!, if you are selling it on that is, a fully serviced amp will be devalued by ANY work done ( filter caps etc, bias caps perhaps not so much ), basically with stuff in this condition the buyer wants everything as was and it only adds value.

I recently bought an amp in the same condition as yours, totally untouched, the seller was advised to get it serviced, I am so glad he didn't, in fact I wouldn't even have looked if it had been serviced.

I talked to you about it via PM on Fakebook. That's a museum piece! Maybe the cleanest Major I've ever seen. Yes, you should play it, while you have it, because actually running it helps to preserve the good running condition of the filter capacitors.

It's worth a small fortune. I can't even bear to insult you with the best offer I could cook up but I'd swap you straight across for my restored '73 Superlead except I know that's NOT a good enough trade offer for THAT!

I'd be willing to bet there aren't ten Majors in the whole world that are as clean as yours is.

    And welcome to the forum!

Would you be so kind as to give us a picture or two of the chassis showing the whole chassis from the tubes and transformers side, please?

Looks like a power cord mod was put on the back panel? Its crazy clean but do people really want these? They have a different circuit than your typical 4 hole and put out 200W. Id say 4k MAX but doubt it sell that high especially as its a Plexi.

This amp is probably cleaner than what Marshall has in their display. I’d offer them the opportunity to buy it and display it in the factory.

He did say he replaced a crumbling power cord. But a grommeted power cord for an early 70s USA model is typical.

Wow that is indeed a perfect set, really sad ( I'm guessing from the red print on valves, JJ's ) it doesn't have the original GEC KT88, for something in that condition those originals would have been not even ready for their first oil change :(

Print doesn't look like JJ to me. His asking price doesn't seem to be outrageous those 1979 cabs are simply perfect looking. As if the stack was never played

That's in amazing condition. But I'd never let the absence of its original set of tubes bother me in the slightest!

I have to wonder at the story of a survivor that's made it 50 years or so and still looks like it's a new rig.

Guy pulled his back lifting the damn things. Decided to leave it for what it is. Here we are almost 50 years later. If I would buy it, history would probably repeat itself. The absurdity combined with the beauty, magic

There was a Major stack in Switzerland 16/17 yrs ago for $2500. I thought about it for my Euro stash ,but some other stuff came up .
I wonder if that's the same one

There's two black plastic pieces bolted to the back panel for wrapping the power cord that is not factory.
