1965 cab refurb!

It’s not like I need any more project cabinets in my life..


Anyhow I picked up this 1965 cab yesterday for free.



Thankfully no woodworm or rot, just the usual dents, blackboard paint(people loved blackboard paint in the ‘70’s) and added holes for handles!


I’ll take some photos as I refurbish it and post them here!

Interestingly enough it has the earlier style baffle(ie no horizontal pine support)and a few construction details they phased out in 1966

I know, I was expecting a 1969 B cab as I bought a slant off of the guy and he mentioned he had another cab!

I have all the parts so it shouldn't be too tricky, im just mulling over whether to replace the bottom as its pretty worn or just glue on some 3mm ply to bring it back to the correct depth

Once it's covered in tolex, no one will question what's underneath.

true! I'll be covering the insides in foam anyhow!

I have some 15mm ply so will probably just go ahead and replace the bottom, one of the pros of working with butt jointed stuff is that its really easy to do!

its a nice thing to be given, plus the guy only lives 2 miles down the road from me!

he also gave me a load of sixties fanes as well, most were shot but two are in good condition!

Looks rough, but can't argue with a freebie. I guess late 65, looks like it had the script logo.

managed to do some more work on the cab today

The butt jointed stuff is really fragile compared to the finger joints/box joint

It only took one kick to get the bottom off, tbh glue and 1” panel pins isn’t really the most heavy duty construction going.

Anyhow the new bottom is on, I’ll get cracking on filling the handle holes tomorrow!

How can you beat free? Great score.
Getting a quad of G10L-35s could prove tough. Any idea what speakers you plan on loading in there?

Yea as it’s a free cab I’d feel bad selling it so I’m doing a more extreme restoration, ie if I was going to sell it I’d have kept the bottom and rebuilt the depth(originality being a big selling point), it’s such a dull/time consuming job compared to just replacing it!

I have the tolex and the correct metal feet/gold piping from a PA cab I recently recovered, so it should look nice once finished!

Speaker wise I’m not sure if it would originally have had alnicos or ceramic celestions.

I have a quad of 1971 g12S’s that I’ve earmarked to go inside, it’s never going to be an original cab and that model of speaker does sound great, I’d be nervous cranking a jtm45 through a set of vintage alnicos, the g12S’s less so!

I think I mistook your post. I thought it was a 1965 (model) cabinet....but it's a 1965 year....which is why you're deciding ceramic/alnico and talking about 12s.
A 1965 model cabinet is 4x10.

Either way...have fun with it.

The batons are back on and I’ve started on one of the handle patches

The handle holes are patched! Once the glue has dried I’ll, get stuck in with the wood filler!
