Yeah preamp distortion doesn't need a hot bias i learned that from a local tech. Makes it bright and fizzy also causes too much heat that can lead...

I have some hiss its normal for higher gain amps not sure how loud your is.
I had to roll a bunch of tubes I was into that at the time:) but I liked the NOS Sylvania's in the v1 v2 and EH 3 and 4 it smoothed the gain...
Try a vintage modern it will blow you away. Lot of people rip on the JVM i had one also and a DSL40c which was cool.
