The clean thing is always good practice, but futile if you have worn out strings from under the string not plainly visible. You would have to run your fingers underneath and feel for fret grooves. Intonation will be off as well.

When going with 10", why I went form Fender BF/SF 1x12 DR's to BF 4x10 SR's and 2x10 VL's. Honestly for a 3-piece would have went with the 4x12B no casters on the floor. YMMV of course.
