    Selling Regrets ?

My first Marshall was a 1967 Super PA. I sold it to finance my 1976 Super Lead when I was 18, because I wanted the Super Lead look… Bad move, but I still have the ’76 SL and it has served me well for decades.

Pulled the trigger on a SV20H

I love mine and together with a good 1x12 it's really the amp I always wanted. Your choice of speaker will be crucial and it's not just the drive unit that matters. But anything that sounds similar to a 70's Marshall 4x12 will do. i went for the Barefaced Reformer 112 (with a V30) and that...

How much louder is a 50 or 100 watt JMP vs an SV20?

Well I bought my first 100w Marshall head (an old '67 Super PA) when I was 13 for £120. Yes, they were cheap back then... And then I spent decade trying to tame pushed Marshalls to sound good at sensible volumes. Today I have them in all sizss. Super Lead, Super Bass, Lead 50w (a.k.a 1987)...

Marshall power scaling? (Origin series etc)

Thanks. Interesting. I was under the impression that the Studio series had a pentode/triode switch to reduce the output power.

Marshall power scaling? (Origin series etc)

No, I don't know anything about Marshall's plans but the power switching in the Origin series seems to be to good to not use in the UK made higher end models. The Studio series seems to be completed and I would assume the Marshall R&D are working on something else and since both the Studio...

Marshall power scaling? (Origin series etc)

Yes, I assume that they are dropping the the voltage powering the power tubes, but because you control it with a three way switch. They also need to bring down the signal hitting the power tubes to prevent them from distorting like crazy when you drop the voltage in the power amp and I assume...

Marshall power scaling? (Origin series etc)

Thank you for your input. I assume that if your amp has no master volume and was built in 1974, then it's a 1987 and not a 2204, which is the master volume mode which was intrduced a year or two later. In that case then the amp I had a London Power PS kit installed in is very similar to yours...

Marshall power scaling? (Origin series etc)

A friend of my recorded his Origin 20 at all the three power settings and normalized the volume levels to make them sound equally load and they the three power settings (20w, 3w and 0.5w) sounded surprisingly similar and since I bought my Origin 20 specifically to get a 0,5w EL34 Marshall to use...

Marshall power scaling? (Origin series etc)

I am really just interested in learning more about how the Origin series switchable output power is working. The technology could probably be applied to bigger classic amp if one just understands how it works. But I would probably rather buy a new Lead 50 or Super Lead with this feature if...

Marshall power scaling? (Origin series etc)

Well Marshall are producing several products and have produced several products in the past with variable output power. - Both the now discontinued YJM100 and AFB100 had power scaling. - The Origin series has three stepped power scaling. (My Origin 20H can be set to 20, 3 and 0.5w) - The DSL...

Marshall power scaling? (Origin series etc)

Does anyone know how Marshall's power scaling is working? I had a London Power power scaling kit installed in my Lead 50s (1987) and it's a bit of a nightmare to balance the power scaling pot with the drive compansation pot (or pots). But the way Marshall do it with just a three way switch in...

Origin 20 - What brands of tubes are they shipping with. Should I consider replacing any of them?

Thanks. I'll leave it as is for now. I have too many other projects to finish and it sounds really good for what I bought it for and that was to get a very low volume Marshall to mic up and use for composing and relatively silent tracking with drums. When I started this thread I hadn't tried...

Origin 20 - What brands of tubes are they shipping with. Should I consider replacing any of them?

Wow. I just tried it with the master all the way up and the O20 was better than I exepted… :)

Origin 20 - What brands of tubes are they shipping with. Should I consider replacing any of them?

Yes, it makes sense. Since the O20 only have two gain stages in the preamp instead of three (1959/1987) or four (2203/2204) pushing the O20's power tubes is probably even more important than with the classic models.

Origin 20 - What brands of tubes are they shipping with. Should I consider replacing any of them?

Ha, ha, great. Thanks for the input. It sounds promising that some of the stock tubes musth be JJ. But I know, tubes varies and I have had new tubes that weren't that great and even NOS...

Origin 20 - What brands of tubes are they shipping with. Should I consider replacing any of them?

OK, interesting. As I mentioned above I haven't tried mine yet. But fortunately I always keep spare quality tubes at home.

Origin 20 - What brands of tubes are they shipping with. Should I consider replacing any of them?

We'll see. But since I am used to very good Marshalls I don't expect this one to be equally good and I am just trying make sure that I do what I can to get the most out of it. But unlike my other Marshall it has a 0.5w setting and it will be very intresting to push a pair of EL34s at 0.5w...

Origin 20 - What brands of tubes are they shipping with. Should I consider replacing any of them?

Well. I haven't even plugged it in yet. I received it today and I will try it tonight or tomorrow. But I expected that a relatively cheap Vietnam made Marshall was shipping with cheap Chinese tubes to keep the cost down. And replacing cheap Chinese tubes is often av very cost effective upgrade...

Origin 20 - What brands of tubes are they shipping with. Should I consider replacing any of them?

Just picked up a nearly new Origin 20H which has been used in a studio for about 10 hours for a project. I have several other Marshalls and the reason for buying the Origin 20H is because I really wanted to try an EL34 Marshall head at 0,5w driving a good 1x12 in the next room at sensible...

'72 SB restore: Can I use 0.022uF/160V NOS Mustard caps in the preamp section?

I have owned '76 Super Lead since I was 18 and also have a Lead 50 (1987) and a Studio Vintage 20H, so I am quite familiar with the Super Lead's control. I always jump the channels and and balance them to get the sound and response I like. I owned a '67 Super PA which I sold to get the SL and I...
