Looks very real to me! And if completely original, then that was a steal!!
Speakers certainly look legit, though the wiring looks unoriginal.
Like Brian says, interesting to see the foam lining. That whitish foam looks like what they used in early ‘66, but photos are too blurry to say whether...
This is interesting and I would love to see more photos.
6 or 7 years ago I bought what was allegedly a trashed 18w chassis from a guy in France(?). I think I came across it at the old Plexi Palace. I was looking for a vintage spec chassis for an 18w project and never thought an original would...
The Marshalls in that recording belonged to Norwegian band The Vanguards, who bought them in the UK.
I’ve written about it before, and I believe I own one of the tall bottom cabs seen in these clips.
Of course, this doesn’t answer the question of when Marshalls were first imported into the US...
I might as well ask here if anyone is sitting on some stuff they might want to sell. Not much is needed for an amp but typically if you can find the NOS stuff it is 100m per spool.
In my never-ending quest to get my clones to sound as good as my vintage Marshalls, I am going to replace some of the wire I have used. Very often I have used modern top-coated/pre-tinned wire. However, I am wondering if using vintage type stranded wire will influence the sound a little.
Some...
Can anyone tell me the brand of preamp tube sockets in Plexi era Marshalls?
Looks like mostly a black type used up to around 1967, then a white type takes over. Is the black type a McMurdo? And the white type a Cinch? Any difference to the construction/material in those?
I am wondering if...
I’ve never been a fan of the way F&T sound/feel. Could be my imagination, but they always sound a little cold and grainy to me. I’ve had better luck with ARS although never done A/B comparison. Only downside is they are not as easily available in Europe.
Many thanks! It would indeed be interesting to find out if the smaller stack makes it sag more under load. The amps with RS power transformer often have the 20H choke, don’t they? I have a combination of a Drake size stack PT (Merren) and 20H choke on my block logo clone, which makes for a...
Is the stack on the power transformer smaller than on the slightly later ones? I must admit I am shaky on the history of the earliest pre-gold panel amps, but I seem to remember some early amps had a different power transformer with lower plate voltage, or is that just a myth?
Very nice! How do you like the sound of that Les Paul build?
The video is great too, very nice to see you talk about the amps. Johan makes a lot of great videos, but something about his playing makes all amps sound a bit same-y. It’s not a dig on his recording or playing, really, as I hear the...
It’s really impressive that you’ve done all of this basically from scratch. An inspiration to all of us! Now we’d love to hear the guitar and amps together.
Ah, I took it for granted we were talking about a G12M. You’re probably right then.
(I’m fine, thanks for asking. Currently refurbishing the barn so I will have more «blast» room. ;))
Hate to be the fly in the ointment, but with a cork gasket, there’s no way that is a genuine 60s 20-watter. A genuine 20w will have a manilla paper gasket with date codes on it, and even then you can’t be 100% sure it’s actually a white coil former denoting a true 20w speaker.
What are the...
Bygonetones will know more about the cones, but I can tell you those are 122232 model Fane speakers. They were made exclusively for Hiwatt and were rated 50W. The magnet is 14000 Gauss. In the Fane world, they can be compared, sort of, to the T1221 Celestion, in that they both have a medium size...
Fascinating to see your work on those speakers. I just reconed a pair of Cerwin Vega ER123s using aftermarket parts which had to be custom fitted, and without previous experience it was a nerve-testing experience but they came out great. Wish I had seen how you inserted the tinsel/pigtail wires...
Hi Stu!
Indeed I think they are...so original after all, eh? The amp above matches mine very closely down to the skinny blue plate wires in the preamp, but mine has a blue Hunts filter cap and grey Radiospares V1 cathode cap. I may put those 1M pots back in then, but they need a thorough...
I’ve put this back into original shape with the correct pots, and it sounds fantastic except for one small thing. I didn’t really notice it at first, so it may have appeared after a while, but there’s a slight crackle/buzz trailing on the sustain of each note. If I back off the guitar volume a...
I’ve wondered the same. Seems a weird choice to have grid stoppers on just two tubes. I built my black flag JTM100 that way for originality (single 1k5 per side) but have been meaning to revert it to a 5k6 for each tube. Wonder if I can hear a difference...
