I was 14 at the time, I'm 62 now & ear training is an ever developing skill. Tuners were really expensive back then & I am glad they were. . I do wish I would have learned to read music when I was younger.
I learned to tune with a pitch pipe. I tuned the G string from the pipe & tuned the rest off the G string. I tried to tune them all from the pipe & could never get it right(I was playing for about 3 months at the time.) When the piano guy came to service my mothers piano, he checked the pipe...
I use 1 of the JohnH attenuators set at -7db with my Helix & DSL40CR. This allows me to run the MV1 & MV2 at 5 or above & control the overall volume with my Helix volume knob.
I am thrilled with this setup & IMO you do not need a Power Station
I had a '99 DSL401. The board needed the solder joints redone after about 6 months. I fixed it 6-7 times while I had it.
A great deal on a DSL40C came up & the DSL401 went. I don't miss the 401 at all.
I have both the 40C(collecting dust at the moment )& the 40CR. I removed C19 from my 40C & immediately reconnected it. Too dull!
I actually added a 330pf bright cap(C74 if IRCC) & definitely preferred the tone. I have rolled tubes in both amps & can hear no difference.
Perhaps my 62yo ears...
I have done similar testing with my DSL40, 40CR & DSL1C & recall doing the same with my Studio 15 many years ago. I came to the same conclusion, I cannot hear any difference. I have had CP tubes that I did not like, but they most likely faulty tubes. I am considering selling off my old tubes...
I've had good luck with the TAD's in my DSL40C. I must have hit a bad batch of JJ's a couple years back. I went thru 2 sets in less than 6 months. They started to turn gray inside the glass & would arc ocassionally.
In the last few years, when going out to see local bands play, the vast majority of the younger guitar players I speak with have never played thru a tube amp. The older players are sick of lugging them around.
Hell, Metallica uses the AXE FX live I believe.
Amazon. I ordered a quad of GT EL-34's on the same order & they have shipped.
I don't know where these 2 brands are(were) actually made though. The GT's are now out of stock as well.
I have a bad feeling that we are near the end for tubes. Electro Harmonix , etc. will analyze if the ROI of...
