reverb tank

guys does the reverb tank fitted to bottom of combo need a little play or not,as i checked mine on a strauss 30w valve combo i just purchased, and i noticed that it had a fair bit of play in it!looks to loose to me but i'm not sure if that's how they want it installed in this amp

Re: reverb tank

I cant think of any reason why there should be play in the tank mounting.

This Strauss, thats a famous old Aussie maker, but now used on a chinese made amp. Ive heard they are quite good, what do you think?

it's a new strauss svc-30...... http://www.straussamps.com/

sounds real good, very similar to a classic 30,looks like a fender blackface the clean is nice, very fenderish and drives well with distortion, but when i looked at reverb tank it is sloppy and i thought it may need tightening to the bottom of amp,as all my other amps are pretty tight to the board.

I've noticed this with some amps, and the only reason I can think of would be to sort of "shock mount" it to keep the springs from "crashing" everytime someone walks near it on stage. But this is just my personal theory on it.

Re: reverb tank

Can't think of any reason for it to be loose.
Most Accutronic units have built in shock mountings internally. The unit itself is mounted solidly on the ones I've seen.

Re: reverb tank

Reverb tanks are supposed to be floating, it's just that most combo manufacturers mount them hard to the cabinet. That's probably correct. Tanks in Fender Reverb heads are floating like that.

thanks everyone for there comment's,i notified the dealer of strauss amps in australia and they told me it has to be floating, mainly for transportation and vibration on stage!
there quote is : The reverb tank is meant to be loose. Please don’t try to tighten it.
This is to ensure the internal springs have some shock absorption during transit.

Re: reverb tank

Hi.

Yep, what Jon and Frankie (and surprisingly the dealer ) said.

There should be rubber grommets or similar to provide isolation and shock absorbment.

If the tank is too securely fitted, it may lead to unpleasant feedback and ghost-note situations as the body of the tank starts vibrating more than intended. That's also one of the reason manufacturers used to put the tanks in padded pouches back in the day.

Regards
Sam
